British songstresses

Sandy Denny though, is known by many for her vocal in Zeppelin's 'Battle Of Evermore' ("dance in the dark-a night, sing 'til the morning light etc"), but as a solo artist, singer with Fairport Convention (below), Fotheringay.... she was awesome.

Buzzer, you will of course not be surprised that I too love Sarah Cracknell. I bought a St.Ettienne greatest hits in HMV this week for £6, and jolly triffic it is too. I do have and cherish the Rustin Man album, and ADORE Beth Orton.

Surprised you've not included Natasha Khan.

Sarah Cracknell is also responsible for my favourite Christmas song [favouriter even than Kirsty and the Pogues], 'I was born on Christmas Day'.

Not at all Buzzer. I'm not scared by that -just shows that you are RIGHT too.

I'm scared by the ODDBALLS who don't like the GREAT music that I hold dear.

Little known Julianne Regan of All About Eve is worthy of mention. Her voice has always given me goosebumps!

I knew her pretty well having seen AAE 4 times in 6 days back in 1989-90 ('Scarlet and Other Stories' tour) and given her a kiss after the Hammersmith show.

A shame they'll always be remembered for messing up 'Martha's Harbour' on TOTP - it deserved a lot better.

An absolutely ethereal voice back then.

'twas deliberate though, wasn't it? THey didn't want to mime.

Great voice and Evanescence ought to pay their dues and acknowledge the influence

Not favourites of mine at all, but you have to include Allison Moyet and Annie Lennox in any list of succesful British female singers.

I never liked the goth aspect to be honest, and got into AAE through Marty Wilson Piper and my near obsession in my yoof with a band called the Church...saw AAE at some small venue in the Cotswalds in the late 90's (I think?) and was amazed!! Jeez now thats going to annoy me - where and when the flip was that gig? ? ?

Oh and Buzzer, [not British] but I also had an obsession with Tanya Donnelly for a while. Both with The Breeders and Belly,

And 10,000 Maniacs too.

I'm amazed by this thread. OK there's some good shouts here, especially some of the more obscure singers but Sarah Cracknell? PLEASE! Pauline Black? And Sade? God help us. But just to really stir things up I have to point out that as far as I can see the finest UK songstress to emerge in the last 10 years has so far not been mentioned and could this be that you have all allowed the media saturation to cloud your judgement?

If you mean that scrawny drug whore, then on my part at least, it is a deliberate ommission.
