The moaning of life

In rehab
Gus signed a contract extension last October, if wages are "an issue" (intimating there being a problem) as the BBC headline claims, then I doubt he'd have been looking to tie himself to the club for the forseeable. He'll have sat down with TB last summer and thrashed all this out, he knows what he's working with, nothing has changed since then.

Its a fact of life not unique to the Albion - if a bigger club or a Prem club comes along waving wads at one of our players, then his head is going to be turned. Hardly news is it.

But maybe Gus is now looking at the bigger picture and that if we are to be serious contenders we need to increase our wage structure.

1) To keep hold of our better players

2) Attract better players

3) Put us maybe in the top 8 regarding budget.

Maybe with the ground expansion and good season ticket sales for nest season we might see an improvement.

Really ?

When one contract with a Premiership club can make you an overnight millionaire, its a fact of life that any player would jump at the chance. Elliott Bennett probably quadrupled his wages and got a big old slab of a signing on fee when he moved, it stands to reason that if a Prem club comes in for you, you've hit the jackpot.

Yes, but the premise behind it. There is nothing stopping a player working after they have finished playing. A Prime Ministers career is exceedingly short (generally), but that does not mean one should be paid a kings ransom.

Why should fans have to spend more and more each year to give some 30 something an early retirement bonus?

some on here reckon we are already paying 20 grand + pmsl

Oh for Christ sake! On what basis can you consistently tell me that he isn't on 20k when GLENN MURRAY told me he left because he was going to be on LESS than half of Craig Mackail Smith's wages. I also have this from DICK KNIGHT as well. I rarley post on here anymore and have no reason to "boost" my reputation as I have no idea, nor will I ever meet, 99% of the posters on here. I have also been told by one Of Murray's neighbours that he again said he left due to CMS being on 20k.

We may have outbid West Ham on footballing terms, but the money they were offering and indeed Leicester was never going to be a world away from what we offered.

Non story I would say. Perhaps he's saying, in his way, that us the supporters need to be realistic when offers do come along for our stars. The directors and obviously Mr Bloom will doubtless be looking at the wage structure more closely in the summer. Having had a full season at the Amex he/they will have a better idea of revenue streams and affordability. Added to that the possible increase in capacity equivalent to the total capacity of Withdean will herald further income. Then and only then would it be prudent (hate that word, relates to Brown) to increase the wage structure.

Never quite understand that justification.
Why not? I think it's fair comment. They DO have short careers - and ones that only ever one bad injury away from a premature end. Plus most of them only really have a short 'window' to maximise their earnings in between being tagged as a promising young newcomer and being deemed to be over-the-hill. Consequently I'd never blame any footballer for saying "I'm moving to club so-and-so as they've offered me a shedload more money".

Whether the wages should be as high as they are is another debate entirely.

That article can be taken completely out of context. It makes Gus look like a whinger lol, that he is not happy. It sounds a lot different on the interview. But as another poster stated, we must renew next season and be hopeful to sell that extra seating if we want to see a better class of player coming through that door. I just don't know how these other championship clubs survive on less crowds?

I would think it was tongue in the cheek comment made for the benefit of agents saying dont come to us asking for ridiculous wages be realistic and we will listen and negotiate.

And people still genuinely think we're paying CMS 25k :lolol:

The reality is we had not even the highest wages in League 1 last season, and came up to this division with a largely similar squad - I would be blown away if any player last season was on more than 3-4k. Even with bonuses and a wage rise for promotion (if that's the sort of thing that's written into footballers' contracts, I assume so) I can still only see Greer (of last season's players) being close to 5k. Harley, LuaLua, Hoskins, Vincelot, Buckley - none are going to be on megabucks. All young prospects or lower league players with potential, only CMS and Vicente could possibly be on more and there is no way CMS is on 5x what the rest are on, that is MENTAL. Poyet would have no room to make comments like this if we were paying any player over 20k.

I'm not saying they should. But its just the reality - most footballers can barely tie their own laces, let alone forge a decent career once they've finished playing. They're overgrown kids. They've had their arses wiped for them throughout their adult life by their clubs, so once that disappears, its a cold harsh world they go into. If they've not made a mint from their careers, and they can't get themselves another job within the game, then it can be a pretty bleak outlook.

Hence if you get offered a 3 year deal somewhere else on £20k a week, then thats you set up for LIFE (if you're not a complete wazzock with the money). Its lottery-winning stuff, so no I don't blame anyone for taking it and skipping the taxi job when they hang their boots up.

Considering Murray left a fair amount of time prior to us even signing CMS how on earth could their wage differential have had anything to do with it? Utter rubbish im afraid.

How would Glenn Murray know how much were going to pay CMS? Murrays negotiations were going on long before we even had a bid accepted for CMS. There is no way CMS is anywhere near 20k a week.

And even if (IF!) Murray said something like that, he's got something of an agenda for doing so, seeing as the reason he isn't here now is because Poyet didn't think he was worth what he was demanding. So it may be that Murray wasn't being entirely accurate, for reasons of his own interest.

Okay. So Dick Knight told me then. I will bet my season ticket on it. Also I have heard this from many "2003" lord of the relm posters at the games.

Murray signed for Palace the day after our trophy presentation, didn't he? So early May. CM-S signed at the beginning of July. I very much doubt we had even entered talks with CM-S by the time Murray had signed his contract with Palace, a space of 2 months.
