"Here’s a prediction. Not one I wish to come true. In the next five seasons, maybe even sooner, Brighton & Hove Albion will be relegated. Not because they’re bad, but because they’re too good. Given the context of their resources and limitations, Brighton are as good as any team in the Premier League right now. And, for that reason, it simply can’t last."

As Times is paywall no point in posting a link but a long article explaining that we can't go on shipping out our best players and staff and expect to stay in the Premier League.. Brentford in same position.

If you're a 'sports writer' you gotta churn up some daily content from somewhere I suppose.

If you look at the historical span of football everyone gets relegated at some point. In the mid 90s a capital driven change was made which allowed a certain small number of clubs a media driven, international fanbase, financially secured certainty that they won't be relegated. For everyone else, it's an inevitability at some point.

The article may as well be called 'sport contains jeopardy - shock'

In other news, Sheffield Wednesday are so shite that it can't possibly last so, soon, they will be Champions of Europe. It's only a matter of time.

And a landslide win for Sunk in the general election? Nailed on.

I mean, we will go down again at some point. Every golden period ends in football. So what? The point is to keep it going as long as possible and enjoy it while we have it.

It annoys me seeing this line trotted out every day online or by some hack journalist. "Look at what happened to Southampton and Leicester!" No shit, what are you expecting as the alternative? We don't have the resources of Man City, football is cyclical.

Even more annoying, when it eventually happens, these journalists will be saying they predicted it, and for the next club punching above their weight, it'll be "Look at what happened to Brighton!"

I went and read it with an open mind, because it's a sensible starting statement. Everyone outside the big six and now Newcastle does well every year to stay above the bottom three. Times and circumstances change and only proper nation state sized wealth can insure against all occurences.

I was expecting an article about the financial deck being stacked, about the big boys catching on to the methods that Brighton & Brentford have utilised, about a smart small club not being able to compete with a smart big club as per the conclusion to 'Moneyball'. However, none of that. Just another 'look at Southampton' article, but bizarrely with Wimbledon thrown in this time. Says absolutely nothing we don't already know. 'Can't get it right every time, blah blah, blah.' He fails to see that the model is predicated upon the risk of relegation being a big factor. It also takes into account the risks inherent with financially overstretching (Leicester, Forest, Everton).

Saying 'Brighton will get relegated at some point' is not the massive reveal he thinks it is. Were he to say it Bloom and Barber, they would simply respond. 'Yep, always a risk for any club of our size.'

I think it's naïve to think we wont go down at some point but I think we have the structure in place to get back up quickly.

If you look at last years relegated teams they look very strong and I'd imagine two will come straight back up, I also think our crowds would stay high so with parachute payments we'd be on a strong financial footing.

I haven’t read the article but I always found him a cut above most of the other journalists. Barnes, Syid and Samuel’s was a top line up in The Times and the main reason why I often bought it.

Are we at risk of going down in the next 5 to 10 years? Yes
Are there at least 10 clubs in the PL just likely or more likely to go down in that time frame? Yes
Is print media doomed in that same timeframe, because nobody is prepared to pay good money for zero insight? Hmmm
