Had an interesting chat last night with someone with far more knowledge of this Brexit malarkey than me.

Reckons Johnson folds tomorrow, weekend to come up with the excuses and announcement on Monday.

Wouldn't say (or didn't know), but I still believe U-turn on Internal Market Bill and Border in the North sea, U-Turn on level playing field and Fishing kicked off into the long grass again.

Although Johnson may then have to wait on tenterhooks as it may not be ratified through the EU Parliament as easily or quickly as he thinks. This is because EU MEPs do not always reflect the political make up of the individual EU states (remember how many UKIP MEPs Britain had in the EU parliament when they couldn't get a single MP into the UK parliament) and those differences could be interesting ???

Apparently at that point the crystal ball started going hazy (between you and me, I think she'd had a few )

The gift that keeps on giving :)
regards
DF

Has anyone else heard a very faint, inconsequential whining noise on NSC over the last week ?

It's hardly noticeable and certainly not worthy of attention or actually doing anything about. But if you listen for long enough when it's quiet, it's just like a very faint drone in the background. It appears all over NSC, but I'm sure I have just heard it on this thread

I could have sworn I heard it again ....................... :lolol:

Well thank goodness the Expats new exactly what they were voting for, along with the fishermen, farmers, car workers, residents of the port towns etc.

It's weird how we only ever see and hear from "ex-pats" who are retired UKIP gammon types on the Costa del Sol, isn't it? I don't recall the BBC ever getting these vox-pops among young British people living and working in Frankfurt / Brussels / Paris / Munich.

Brexit question of the day...

How many 3rd country trade deals will fail be to rolled over by January 1?

So looks like light touch border at Calais for 6 months, no checks

Emm, lets go WTO now and see where we end up shall we?

Anyone get the feeling that this deal will be great for EU exporters wanting tariff free access to UK market?

What about UK services in Europe? Who's talking about services?

More to the point, can I still go out to Belgium and load up with beer from Vanuxeem and bring it back ok without reams if paperwork and Customs and Excise jumping on me at Dover?

Bloody Worthing!
Looking ahead (just a few days, perhaps) at the scenario where even this bunch of charlatans achieve some sort of deal, what will be the reaction of the really hard core Brexit loonies (Farage, ERG, and one or two in these parts)? Will they frame Johnson (the Great Brexiteer Redeemer) as a Judas or a quisling? How nasty will it get? How will Johnson et al sell it?
Given the revolt in the Tory party over Covid will pressure pile on pressure for Johnson?

Of course in the face of this he might simply press the no deal, nuclear button and wreck the economy for good. There's only so much stress the poor guy can take.

Even no deal brexit won't wreck the economy for good.

An emergency rescue 'Norway deal' is do-able within weeks.

Isn't it going to be great though to be able to watch the delight on the faces of those who get "what they all knew they were voting for" next month ?

Think they will cobble together a weak deal. Obviously, nothing like promised. Most Brexiteers will hail it as an incredible deal, not getting what they voted for.

Important to remember the Tories voted for parliament having no ratification on the deal. What could possibly go wrong ?

Ultimately, someone will have to front up to the British Public and say " Sorry, what you voted for is not economically or physically possible without a huge financial cost" ... All we do is go around in circles, if we take just one part of leaving the EU, the need for a border of some sort between NI and Eire, its pretty much insoluble without great political and financial cost. We are now a month away from the end of transition and the much vaunted and hoped for " Technological Solutions" for the border have failed to show up.... just as expected. So, will Johnson front up and be the bearer of bad news? No chance.... Someone else will have to carry the can and it will be made to look like the EU.

Considering we were promised we'd be in a "free trade zone between Iceland and the Russian border" then yes, it'll be nothing like what was promised.

Exactly this. It would utterly **** us for those few weeks, however. Maybe this is what is needed, a bit of a public education in the harsh realities of Brexit which then forces Boris (or whoever he hands the poisoned chalice onto) to "sort it out". Ironically, the headbanger Brexiters who cheer a lack of trade deal in the initial period might end up rueing it longer term as the "rescue deal" would be even more biased toward the EU, and there's no longer a big orange man in Washington riding to our rescue.

For any that has spent time in business and sales, the reality it takes a long time to build up new markets, relationships and customers. But if you f**k up you can lose it all in a heart beat.

Imagine a farmer selling lamb to an EU customer and has 50% tariff imposed overnight. They've be buying from Australia or NZ before you know it

No deal will be permanent damage even if just for a few weeks

Hunch is they've caved in a level playing field...
