Deepest, darkest Sussex
Middlesbrough — Swainby - In the birthplace of Captain James Cook, the famous explorer who discovered the uninhabited island of Australia (which grew into a country with an enviable record of immigration control).

So enviable you rarely see anyone who isn't a native Australian knocking around the place, and rarely any white faces at all.

The Gammonball Run itinerary for today made me chuckle:

Middlesbrough — Swainby - In the birthplace of Captain James Cook, the famous explorer who discovered the uninhabited island of Australia (which grew into a country with an enviable record of immigration control). We will meet outside PoundLand in Captain Cook Square at 8.55am.

Meet outside PoundLand. :lolol:

Why is the reference to PoundLand funny? Is PoundLand beneath you?

If you ever want to help heal the divisions in this country then you should also stop referring to people as gammons. No one should be judged on their appearance, and it also immediately kills the debate. Grow up.

Obviously it must be referring to their multi cultural net migration of circa 200,000 per year as being enviable and not the historical White Australia policy.

I just spent a few minutes on that website. Took almost that long for the penny to drop.
A work of art.

I do apologise - I thought that Gammonball Run website was actually genuine until I read further down the itinerary. It caught me hook, line and sinker. That's one of the things with Brexit - parody and reality have become the same thing.

A work of comic genius though whoever dreamt it up.

It is one of the less clever/funny references I'd agree.

Unless I'm missing something it just strikes me as taking the piss out of the less wealthy communities who voted leave, and some of which, perhaps because of monetary restrictions, are regulars at PoundLand. If that's what it is then that's pretty nasty, I think.

Makes you wonder what kind of thicko’s Farage’s supporters are. School kids, SCHOOL KIDS can mobilise a nationwide protest on climate change. Twice. This bunch of bootless dunderheads can’t even break triple figures. Pathetic.

While schoolkids, council employees,Socialist Workers:)lolol:),economists, and other unemployables can take time off with no effect,Brexiteers mostly work for a living!:)

Yes yes, great deflection.

Can you explain the comedic value? Was I right?

It's this kind of attitude which partly contributed to us leaving in the first place.

I do not enjoy laughing at the financial misfortune of others. It's in really poor taste.

I hate what the Tories have done to this country in that respect.

Now, people position themselves in Remain or Leave camps and lose sight of the values they had before the referendum. I've always been a left winger who is hoping for more equality in society. Even though I voted to Remain, I would not laugh at a joke making fun of the financial circumstances who those who voted Leave - it seems pretty contradictory to my values.

The political debate in this country has become seriously damaged.

You most be loaded being able to afford such a high horse.

The PoundLand reference had nothing to do with the financial misfortune of others and everything to do with the organisation quality of the march itself. It was sending that up, not the people. You also know that Alan Partridge isn't real right?

If that's true, then it's still in poor judgement. I'm not sure it is though. I did ask ManOfSussex what was funny about it more than once, in case I took it the wrong way, but received no response.

I'm sorry, I can't see how you've taken it the way you have. The historic Captain Cook Square, and of all the actual gathering points they chose PoundLand, its just mocking the organisers, and perhaps those who think it's a good idea - all 100 of them. Honestly, the whole event was like an episode of Alan Partridge. It might be poor judgement in comedy terms, but in terms of offending people, give over.
