That must have been hugely frustrating for you.

I remember being terribly frustrated at the inability/unwillingness of Brexiteers to listen. The whole world advised them not to vote leave, from Cameron, Merkel and Hollande to Obama and the IMF. Even when currency markets delivered their immediate verdict, with the GBP dropping alarmingly hours after the vote, they still didn't listen.

Today, even in the complete absence of any evidence of success for Brexit, and an ever growing bank of evidence that Brexit has failed, some are still not listening.

My Dad had a phrase 'experience is a lone teacher', but he died before he could test it out on any Brexiteers.

One benefit is clearly that we have the right to control who comes into the country. The obvious downside is that we haven't yet found politicians who can do that. I suspect the entrenched incompetence of the Home Office hasn't helped.

I know that in high wage areas like Brighton, you rather like the idea of shedloads of low paid foreigners coming in and driving down wages as low as possible, because it makes your stuff cheaper. In low wage areas like Burnley, the attraction of the low wages being driven down even lower is harder to appreciate.

You know communists used to say, communisim wasn't the problem, just the way it was implemented in Russia, China, Vietnam etc etc etc. They kind of had a point didn't they? The only thing is I never really felt it was that helpful a viewpoint for people who actually had to live with it.

Maybe the problem wasn't workers being paid the same, but the small but powerful cohort making all the decisions and the corruption that entails, when you can justify just about anything based on ideology.

So the actual net migration figure of 504,000 is five times the stated aim of under 100,000 originally set by David Cameron, five Prime Ministers ago.

So is this a) a Brexit success (we've taken back control) or b) a Brexit failure (we haven't taken back control at all), or c) neither a) nor b). Move the goalposts instead and re-package it as a positive news story?

It also shows that we are a tolerant and compassionate country (despite what you might read on this thread) willing to accept hundreds of thousands of people fleeing war zones in unique circumstances while living up to our past international commitments offering safe refuge to residents in Hong Kong.

The half a brain part being if you voted Brexit thinking this would transform control of our borders. We already had control. The fact is we need immigration. Take the humanitarian routes out of it, and all that has happened is we've opened up to more non-EU migration to replace what we've lost in those from the EU. This was always going to happen. In or out of the EU immigration hasn't been something we have failed to control, it is something our economy has needed. Elephant in the room. Always was. Tories can talk about 100k targets - but that is utter bullshit, and they have no intention of meeting those targets, it is just cake for their voters and Daily Mail readers.

If someone voted for Brexit and thought after it was enacted, immigration from the EU would be dramatically reduced then they have already achieved that goal. The main elements of the big increase in immigration in the past year have been the Uk government's decisions showing what a tolerant welcoming country we are which is obviously baffling for the radicalised anti-Brexit fanatics trying to portray the Uk as an intolerant anti-immigrant country.

In that case, why didn't the Brexit camp make it clear that while it intended to control EU immigration, it had no intention and/or ability to control non-EU immigration, the result of which has resulted in a new overall record 504,000 net figure? Don't you think that was disingenuous? What harm would it have done to be honest with their constituency?

It's a good plan, but the local council can't afford to fill the diggers with fuel, so digging the valley out has been put back until after the next election.

As for how, why and when, such questions are just noise to our leaders, forward-thinkers and paradigm-shifters. Tory MPs operate on a higher plane.

I reckon one of them comes up with these wizard ideas in closed meetings, and they all slap each other on the back in a show of appreciation before it is introduced to a wider audience, at which point, more worldly people ask 'WTF?', and produce a long list of hitherto unforeseen pitfalls. But then it's too late. They've already announced it and have to run with it, steadfastly defending it until it falls apart.
