Michael Green seems to think Brexit will actually help the driver shortage.

Met with a mate of mine last night who is a Retail Consultant, 10% price rises across the board in food from January. Whatever happened to the Moggs cheap food?

I agree to an extent to be fair, but I think Brexit is exacerbating problems more than they would have been felt (e.g.) 3 years ago, and will mean the recovery from them takes longer.

One of the drivers union guys on the BBC said there was 40,000 tests cancelled last year - plus more renewal exams.

You then have people who needed to find work elsewhere during lockdown that don’t want to go back

Plus, people queuing up for petrol are idiots.

We also had a whole load of drivers from Europe (mostly eastern Europe) who left last year and as HGV driver is not on the list of acceptable occupations for the new Government post-Brexit immigration rules they are also being felt. A few years ago it's likely the hauliers would simply hire in some eastern European labour for a few weeks and get through the crisis, that's no longer an option.

You also had the pettiness of the driver testing from France and the UK

Brexit is playing a part, but lockdowns have played a bigger part in my view

Well I'm not one that is blaming it completely on Brexit, but putting a hard Brexit on top of broader issues is a tipping point. It was obvious the UK government was never ready for Brexit, take customs controls the Dutch were ready, the French were ready, we weren't so we have an open customs border at Dover for the foreseeable. What was the point of Brexit if trade sanctions are only imposed one-way? As a result many British businesses have been thrown under the bus, EU businesses have more time to adjust

There are driver shortages in Europe too, but I don't see empty shelves in France, Germany or even Ireland, let alone fuel shortages. It a weak government at the best of times, Covid and Brexit together too much.

You forgot to mention the union strike action at the DVLA in Swansea which got the ball rolling
