You do have a choice, you are not forced to buy a licence. Don't buy a licence and just watch Prime Youtube, Netflix, DVDs/Blurays and Non-BBC like ITV Player, Channel 4 on-demand, as long as it's not live

If you compare the countries that have a dedicated fee the UK is 4th (half that of Austria) but that doesn't show the full picture.
Where the licence fee has been abolished many countries now fund the broadcasters through general taxation.
So you end up paying for TV even if you don't own one which isn't the case in the UK.
I suspect the BBC will end up with a mix of subscription for certain services and beef up it's commercial side. I doubt however that even this Government would want to see the end of public service broadcasting and there will still some form of licence fee or tax to pay for it.
