There are 3 giant economies, US, China and EU. You can measure the economies in different ways and get different results. If you factor in cost of living, China comes out top, EU second, US third. If you don't factor in cost of living, then EU is top, US second, China third.

Based on purchasing parity we are ninth, behind Indonesia. Brexit is killing us

That is a small step towards a vote for the Tories, Closet Tory sympathiser:
Temporarily only, I hope. I voted Tory in the last general election for the first and only time in my life, purely to protect the most important thing on the agenda: Brexit. I hope when the next general election comes round we'll be well and truly and safely out of it so I can vote Labour again, as usual (or spoil my ballot paper, as I have done occasionally in the past when they've really cocked it up (Michael Foot as leader, for example)).

The EU referendum was not legally binding, no matter what Dave the Man may have said. An inconvenient legal truth:
Whatever the legal niceties, most of 34M voted (on both sides) in the belief that it was a binding and final vote. That in itself gives it a degree of validity. Politicians certainly cannot ignore that.

She is wading through treacle, yes she is. The biggest tin of Lyle’s Black Treacle can we have ever seen. That was part of why some people voted remain, this is going to get ugly in many different ways.
Some people voted remain because they thought it was the easiest option (and all those nice politicians had told them the sky would fall in if they didn't go along with that?) Yeh, I can believe that.......

I am Toried out, they have done too much damage to this country already.
Pity you (and millions of others) didn't recognise that before Thatcher had wreaked more havoc on British manufacturing industry than the Luftwaffe managed (and flogged off all the family silver, from British Telecoms, plus the Gas and Electricity providers, and council houses, all for peanuts).

he makes it sound easy with the coveat "if there is a will". if there is no will to find solutions and only look at this border issue as a problem, it will be very difficult. today so much goods documentation is electronic, scanning vehicles is common place, link the two together and you have the basis of an invisible customs border. you may chose to reject this out of hand, or chose to accept its the beginning of a solution.

It won't work, you would just create a smugglers paradise. Its never been done anywhere on the planet.

Only Brextremists are suggesting technology is a solution

it is being done, EU already has electronic customs systems (look up ATLAS). the pharmacy industry has a electronic tracking system in progress (EU mandated) which should be in place in coming years (behind schedule though). i believe its being driven in India and Asia Pacific region too. this isnt some flight of fancy, its where international customs is headed too anyway.

Electronic filing of Customs paperwork is not the same as having no border checks. If I fly to Spain, my passport is checked electronically at the airport these days, but I am still stopped and checked, and required to have my passport, same with any other route past the "open" border we have with the EU.

Wow that is class.A remoaner posting something that shows an over 50% vote is a winner and should be acted upon. But,unfortunately,it wasn't a referendum so no action would be taken.I think our resident 'teller of tall tales' would have done a better job.He would probably have included vicars beating up immigrants from his village, and people with tears in their eyes apologising to him for being religious.

Don't care how you factor it,the EU is going to be a smaller economy in just over a year's time.

The issue has been clouded a bit by the Swiss referendum on free movement and the vote to ban foreigners,.

Point of order,The Swiss referendum was not a vote to "ban" foreigners at all. It was a vote to allow EU citizens to enter according to quotas, as they already have in place with regard to non EU citizens where non EU citizens are not "banned" from entering Switzerland either.

Actually with regard to customs checks its being done right now on the 1000 mile border between Sweden and Norway(not in the customs union)
Technology plays a huge part

"We brought together two customs officers with decades of experience working at the border to discuss what the UK could learn. Anita Graff from Norway and Vidar Gundersen from Sweden now work for a commercial customs agency, but once collaborated on a trial project to use technology to speed things up at the border.
"It is possible to set up solutions with smooth border crossings without stopping - the technology is there already," says Anita. She says the UK could get such a system up and running within 18 months."

"Whether it is number plate recognition or a driver's smartphone app telling customs everything in a lorry has been cleared, the technology needed to make a border work smoothly is not exactly rocket science. The real challenge is bringing together politicians, customs officials and businesses from different countries to allow it to launch successfully."

It might not be easy given the differences in volume, but to say it has never been done anywhere on the planet is wrong.
You are certainly a "cant do, not possible" type of person.

Good to know, a practical solution.

Personnally I wish there was more of this sort of solution posted rather than the usual pro-Brexit zealotry.

More facts, less spin is the way forward, I hope.

Well hopefully someone has told Theresa and she can get it sorted in the next 9 days

230,000 vehicle checks at that border last year. https://www.politico.eu/article/brexit-ireland-border-customs-norway-sweden/
This is certainly not possible with a no deal Brexit in any case.
I am sensing that it is dawning upon the Leave voters on this thread that a no deal scenario is a terrible situation, especially for N. Ireland and Gibraltar. Twice in the last week a leaver has suggested Norway or Switzerland as a model starting point.

Sir Albion will not be pleased. American and German Pharma taking advantage of UK government incentives for R&D.

But yes, a bit of good news.

The people who actually did it say it is possible, and they are in a position to know - but of course, they don't have an agenda driven by an 'everything is impossible if we leave the EU' mentality.

Well, as I pointed out above TM will be ecstatic that you've come to her rescue with 9 days to go.

We're beyond political point scoring, this is now real FFS
