The two stand-out poor decisions Oliver made (from what I think I saw live - I've seen neither replay):

1. To NOT book JPVH in the first half, when he took a heavy touch on the edge of our box, then went flying in on their lad. Play carried on, and they had a presentable opportunity - and I think he must have forgotten to go back and get his card out. Horrible challenge.

2. To not give a free kick to Baleba, for a blatant pull-back, in the build up to the big late chance, where Bart made the close-range save. I swear he actually put his whistle to his mouth at first, then changed his mind. Half our players momentarily stopped, because the fould was so clear and he'd looked to be calling it.
I am not convinced that the JPVH booking when he got one was justified, maybe the early one avoided had an influence. I am not sure JPVH was even aware of the player who ran across him when he got booked.

True. Super player, would be even higher in my books if he didn't spend so much of his time windmilling his arms in the ref's face after every decision, but then we have Pedro, who's also an incredible talent if he didn't spend 40% of every match writhing is "agony" on the floor.

Also, I agree on the pen. It doesn't actually matter where the ball was either, if you knock the ball past a player anywhere else on the field and then get cleaned out, it's still a foul. Do I think you should get a near guaranteed goal when the other outcome is a goal kick? No, but penalties are almost always FAR too high a price to pay for the majority of decisions in the game. That's just a personal gripe of mine. Basically giving a team a free goal for the most minor of infractions annoys the hell out of me
I checked his background after posting what I did and it's surprising TBH. He's already 25 and had relatively poor spells with Ajax and Roma. Perhaps a late bloomer or just having "one of those" seasons. I'd assumed he was younger.

He was very good for Ajax, massive talent at that stage, but didn't want to renew his contract so they were desperate to move him on. Ended up in Roma, where career goes to die, and that was a massive blunder (think he has said himself he shouldn't have left Ajax so early). I'm in the "late bloomer" camp because he showed right from the start in Ajax that he could/should be a top class player.

Spot on, on both decisions.

I couldn't believe he didn't book PPVH once the ball had gone dead.

It was a great game but at times it was frantic with a lot of headers and head tennis…not what I’d expect from two teams who try to play football.

Anyone else think this?

But I have seen reviews for both teams (mentioning we have similar footballing strategies) talking of 'planned chaos'. There are certainly parts of the game where both teams press very quickly and try and shut down 'pretty football' from their opponents, in an attempt to win possession and it can look fairly frantic.

There was certainly quite a bit of that last night (y)

2 teams going at it. Proper open first half. Really good game of football.

Both games against them this season have been excellent.
First half was like a game of basketball. As entertaining as it was I'm still not sold on Fab's kamikaze tactics but they worked well last night. The only thing you could fault Bournemouth on is their composure when they got near the goal. That said you can also give our defence a pat on the back for that as well.

If you're playing Bournemouth and a player falls over for no reason it's Kerkez 90%of the time.

I'm not sure he even touched him.

I wasn't even sure it was a foul. Van Hecke wasn't looking in the direction of the Bournemouth player at all, and it looked to me as though the Bournemouth player stood on his foot and fell over.

Justin Kluivert is my favourite non-Albion player, he’s just so good. I wonder how long they will be able to keep hold of him for.

There's no way that JPVH "handball" was being given, ever (well, aside from the early days of VAR). It's point blank and even then it barely brushes him. "Umpires call" is a massive stretch for that one.

Our one was more subjective. I agree with you that it was unlikely JP was getting there after winning the race to the ball, but the fact is that he won the race to the ball and was then taken out. The keeper (and defender who pushed him) gave the ref a decision to make. IMO, if that had been waved away, we'd have been more aggrieved than Bournemouth fans are that it was given.

I thought JPVHs arm was slightly - and I emphasise the word slightly - outstretched. If Oliver blows up, I'm not sure he is sent to do the walk of shame to overturn it which is where the Umpires call comment came from. We will never know as common sense prevailed.

We've watched enough Joao Pedro to know the drill by now. My and my lad just burst out laughing when Oliver pointed to the spot.
