"I'm not surprised Brighton and Southampton are doing so well in the Championship. Both have been restructured and, having been promoted, are on the crest of a wave.

"They've both done some shrewd business and I beleive they've proved the difference between League One and the Championship is not that great. Brighton have underlined their ambition by signing CMS and Vicente, the former Valencia winger. He must have compromised on his demands because when I enquired about him it was too much for us financially"

My question is this - Did Vicente and CMS really sacrifice larger wage packets at bigger clubs or does Bloom just wish us to think this to stop him being held to ransom by other clubs when negotiating for players? It's nice to think Vicente joined us in our wage structure and turned down an offer for three times the money, but I wonder if this is really the case?

Perhaps we are spending bigger time than we realise but sensibly keeping a low profile about it!

I found an artcile from January on-line the other day. It was about Blackburn laucnhing an 'ambitious' bid to lure Vicente. If the signing is ambitious for a Premier League club, what does it make the signing for us?

I think we're going for it in a bigger way than we all realise - and I think that's fantastic.

I have to say that having seen the majority of the Leeds game online, not having seen the Albion play for several seasons, I cannot remember us having a team that played with such skill, quality or desire. This really has to be considered a golden age for the Albion, possibly the dawn of something far greater than we even dare to imagine. I really do mean this, I started watching the Albion when the club were still in division one in 1981, even during promotion campaigns it was never that good. This team oozes quality.

Purely because Vicente has turned down proper big money moves in the past, I'm inclined to believe he has joined within our wage stucture. If we could have spent more, we could have got anyone, but we've got someone who speaks the same language as the manager (and others) and who wants to play a certain style of football. Remember that the money at this level is nothing compared to what he has been offered before, so it's unlikely he is that driven by money.

Oh, it's just Big Sam whingeing because he missed out on both of them and thinking it was all about money.

CMS has stated that he could have gone elsewhere for more money but Gus was very persuasive, and I'm sure Vicente also came for much the same reason, as well as having a manager who spoke Spanish.

Let's face it, if you'd just arrived here from Spain, would you really understand much of what Alladyce says?

I'd say it's more likely West ham kept upping their offer thinking more money was all they needed to offer, CMS/Vicente turned them down and rather than look at himself, the football he plays, the current stature or momentum of the clubs he assumed it was because other clubs paid more instead of other clubs being more appealing.

I think Vicente probably did compromise...if it was the Championship that was his choice, he would probably only have heard of Sven, McClaren and Gus. Obviously Gus and Brighton would have been the natural option for style of play, the fact that Gus speaks Spanish (and Calderon) and the fact Vicente would have watched Gus play for Zaragoza in La Liga and may even have looked up to him (Vicente made his debut for Levante in 1997...Gus left for Chelsea in the same year.)

No idea about wages but one thing that must be certain is that Vincente (a Spanish skilful player) would not want to play for a bunch of old hoofers like west ham under Sam A. After all he doesn't want to spend his afternoon with some old school English manager shouting things like "down the line", "knock it long", "put it in" or the classic of "run the channels son"

I think there was a little over-hyping of the 'CMS could have got more elsewhere' line at the time of the signing - which some people translated as 'He's on peanuts', and we were some sort of charity case.

He may or may not have got more elsewhere - but he's certainly on very decent money, maybe the most ever, and there has been a concerted campaign to keep the salary quiet (normally it comes out) maybe not to upset the rest of the dressing room.

I imagine Vicente is on at least the same, that figure of £17k a week sounds in the ball-park to me.

Still nice to have nicked TWO players from under the nose of that dinosaur.

What Vicente really said in spanish of course is "you can offer me a million a week and I still aint joining you, you fat arogant northern monkey. I want to ball at my feet so I can play football, not flying over my f***ing head and chaseing down the second ball all the time. Now f*** off, im jumping on the Gus bus"

Obviously we can't know about the negotiations between club and potential player, simply because that's the way most chairmen play it these days. I don't know about Vicente:bowdown: But we know CMS took a smaller wage to play for us, because that came straight from the horses mouth in Barry Fry. Big Sam is looking for excuses early, as he has realised this league is harder than he remembered.

Oh come on, what do you people expect Big Sam to say "neither wanted to play for me", of course it suits him to suggest it's down to money. It wins both ways for him, as it denies players turn down his brand of football, and puts pressure on his board to give him more to spend.
