Not my best (cross of iron from the op possibly) but The 9th Company portraying the end period of USSR s occupation of Afghanistan was excellent.

Like many, I love war films...its probably my "go-to" genre tbh, and many listed here are among my favourites for sure.
I've always had a thing for the 1950's movies though - and in my opinion, you cant beat the likes of:

The Cruel Sea, Reach for the Sky, Ill met by Moonlight, The Desert Rats, Dambusters, Ice Cold in Alex, Cockleshell Heroes, Malta Story, & Dunkirk etc. etc.

Classic movies.

No Valkyrie, Uncs? For some reason I've always thought your avatar was Spielberg in German WW2 cap on the set of Valkyrie, but looking it up he didn't direct it.

So many good ones remembered from my childhood . . .

The Cruel Sea
Ice Cold In Alex
The Dambusters
633 Squadron

Plus many many more.

An honorable mention too to a much more recent film, a bit left field, and because l consider piracy to be tantamount to war l'll include it . . .

Captain Phillips.

In Which we Serve is rather less gritty than The Cruel Sea but also tells of the service of the 'small ships' of the Royal Navy in WWII.

Superb cast led by, of all people, Noel Coward as Captain D...
