HMS Invincible was sunk by the Argentines during the Falklands War (they still claim this by the way) and the ship which returned to Pompey was her newly built sister Illustrious. To maintain the illusion of three aircraft carriers the ship which was to become Ark Royal then pretended to be Illustrious and a fourth sister ship was built secretly in America.

Evidence against: It takes 5+ years to build a ship that big, a thousand sailors returned safely to their families, all the media based on Invincible returned safely without mentioning it.

Apparent evidence for: The ship which came back had a grey mast not a black one...

Clearly a conspiracy in which thousands of people would have to be complicit is more believable than a few chaps and a pot of paint.
