The Specials at the Top Rank in 1979 - the same time as the Tory Conference was on - was one of the greatest concerts I have been to. I think they did 6 encores and I was amongst several of the stage invasions. Great nite!

i was there that night:bowdown:

It's on the B-Side of 'Gangsters'. That group called The Selecter on the first 2Tone record wasn't the Selecter we came to know. It was basically a session group featuring members of The Specials and what became The Selecter.

I DJ'd at Selecter and Bad Manners gigs a few times in the early 90s, and can definitely say that Pauline Black is much better to look at than to listen to. Know wot I mean?

Interesting. Makes sense because it doesn't sound anything like The Selecter, which all in all is a good thing.

And I'm not sure I do know what you mean, PB never looked all that to me, especially with the cropped hair?

I'm talking about c.1990. And she's not looking too bad these days either.

I take it you'll be at the Neville Staples/Beat gig coming up in April TLO? I've seen both separately and both rocked.

I've seen Selector at the Pressure Point supported by Too Many Crooks about 1997-8, were you djing then?

Possibly - I lose track.

I've DJ'd Too Many Crooks LOADS of times, and the bass player used to live upstairs from me. Some of their band made up Seagulls Ska, and I was one of the backing singers. Most of them are Brighton fans and top blokes.

This might be sacrilege to Dave The Gaffer, but I never was a massive Beat fan. I haven't seen Neville Staples' gigs, so may well pop down there. Where is it? Concorde? Pressure Point?

Yeah - I was never really big on the Beat. Aways preferred the Specials or Selector.

Mind you the band I really really liked were the Merton Parka who I only ever saw once, although I saw a really bizarre gig at the Greys about 6 years ago where Doctor Robert from the Blow Monkeys did an acoustic set and Mick Talbot (Mertons/Style Council) did a jazz funk set in the style of the James Taylor quartet. There were about 15 of us in the pub!
