On Saturday matchdays, I really can't see this being a problem. The volume of cars that passes through that area in a short space of time at rush hour must be equivalent to the amount of traffic they are talking about here. Evening games may be a bit more of a problem, however, when most people will be turning up, a lot of the rush hour traffic will be gone.

You look at a lot of stadiums around the country that don't have anything like the infastructure that we are creating for our stadium, and yet they work absolutely fine. I'm very confident that while the traffic and parking infastructure is far from ideal - it will work without too much incovenience to other traffic using the road.

I fully expect there to be problems initially at the AMEX. I also fully expect an unholy row to kick up when people find that they are 'inconvenienced' when things do work in exactly they way that they want. The truth is though that for any stadium of a reasonable size there are access and exit issues.

However I also expect that by around mid-october people will be far more concerned with how well/badly we are doing on the pitch rather than how we get to and from the stadium. The way that debate has been conducted on here makes me wonder whether anyone will actually get to the stadium at all! I'm glad they've upgraded the catering facilities, as it appears that those lucky/resourceful enough to actually get to the stadium will never be able to leave, according to the doom-mongers, so extra supplies will be a plus.

It is still true however that the AMEX offers the full transport mix to supporters, be it road, bus, rail, cycling and walking. People will figure it out for themselves eventually, even if it means parking 20-30minutes walk away, or getting the bus rather than train etc. Until the stadium starts operating at capacity we are never going to know exactly how it will all come together. I am fully confident that after a month or so things will settle down and people will devise their own routines for getting to and from the stadium. Yes it may take longer than you would ideally like, but that is the price of success.

Im still not 100% sure what to make of all this.

Can someone give me a very basic decription of what the real facts are here, as ive heard nothing from the club on this?

We agreed to have a certain amount of spaces and now we cant have them and its causing major issues for us being able to open? Is that it.....

Ive read it mate, but my take on it is, weve got nothing at all to worry about as this is a few raised concerns.....its certainly not the club saying we cannot open the ground or any of the scaremongering crap on here.

Just wanted some clarity, as far as I see it....theres no issue.

The club wouldnt gamble on something, so whats the problem.

This. We'll all have forgotten about transport issues by October.

We used to get 20,000 (and more) at the Goldstone in the 70s and 80s and I don't recall anyone moaning about transport there. Yes, there were probably a few thousands spectators who lived within 15 minutes of the ground but that can set aside a total lack of parking near the ground, fewer buses and a railway station that was further away. I remember going with my dad in the car and often parking 20 minutes or so away. Loads of people did this and it was accepted as being perfectly normal. I'm sure we'll get in that mindset again.

Really?

My recollection is, literally, completely the opposite - there was a massive amount of on-street parking all around the Goldstone. The streets in almost every direction for great distances afforded on-street parking on residential roads. It's what we always did travelling from the West.

The simple FACTS are that there is a planning application by the Football Club to build a new temporary car park next to the stadium. The new car park is needed because the Club no longer has the use of the Falmer Academy site for parking (and must find enough parking in the area to comply with the planning conditions that were imposed when the stadium was given the go ahead). The planning application will be considered by Lewes District Council shortly. The period for comments and objections closed earlier this week. The comments and objections have now been published and most of them express concerns about the fact that the new car park will cause additional delays and traffic congestion. Even the Club's transport consultants say it will, unless extra traffic management measures are put in place on matchdays.

The DISCUSSION is about whether or not the delays will be bad enough to make getting to the stadium difficult for everyone.

We're all booked onto 2-3 coaches leaving from the Romans pub in southwick, a journey estimated to take 20 mins.
Apparently, so we've been told, when we get near the ground, the police will be escorting the coaches in.
They also said at the meeting where the bookings were made, that after the game, the police will be holding up the eastbound traffic on the A27 to let all the coaches out of the ground.
So I've now got my fingers crossed there won't be major traffic problems, don't wanna sit on the coach for yonks

If this is only a temporary arrangement, surely it won't be rejected?

Just far enough away from LDC
No, you are not.

What I would say is that I have heard Lord B and many others make comments of this nature in the past - only that would have been directly to the club in the forums that existed. It didn't make them anti club then and it doesn't make them anti club now.

They made these comments in an attempt to make the application, details and the communication of them better. There are a large number of potential own goals that the club were saved from during that time - the way that good friends (and advisors) should. Those meetings continued after Dick Knight's departure but did stop about the same time as the falling out over the Ask The Project team stuff.

So to summarise, I dont see Ed's comments as unusual or unhelpful. I don't believe he is being ant club and I certainly don't believe it is linked to the departure of Dick Knight.

For the second time ... It's not being "anti-club" to identify a problem that the Club needs to overcome. There were dozens of such problems when Dick Knight was Chairman. There are several now.

It's unlikely that LDC will reject the application. Even Falmer Parish Council isn't arguing that it should. The issue is whether the transport arrangements will actually work. If they don't, then we can forget a 30,000 seater stadium, at least for a few years.

If the Bennett's Field site is to be for 1901 Club Members, then anecdotally at least, these are the people who will be more likely to arrive earlier and leave later (many taking advantage of the hospitality), thereby staggering the traffic flow.

Of course, it's not something a planning application should hang its hat on, but it's something which may prove to be marginally more beneficial in the actual use of the site.

Ok thanks mate.

I think were surely all in agreement that its obviously going to cause issues, my thoughts are that its going to be a nightmare irrelevent of these extra parking spaces being made available.....but people who dont have a parking space with (1901) have no reason to drive next to the stadium.

Were all aware that there is little or no parking spaces on-site or nearby so why would you drive to the stadium if you already know you cant park there!

I apologise. I removed it as I realise I was being a bit ignorant in this particular instance.

Car parks aren't the problem, as any one who has been to Bournemouth can verify, it's the amount of exits in different directions. Otherwise it ends up looking like the get to higher ground scene from Deep Impact!

Way out west
I seem to remember that the club said that they would be able to use a car park opposite Mithras House which was larger than there as well as continuing MH. Not sure how many extra spaces this would provide.

Have always used MH since Withdean opened and never had any problems, apart from one bus breaking down going up a hill and another catching fire.

Pretty much how they work up and down the country. It's what happened when I drove the minibus to Stoke.

Except they didn't hold up the traffic on the A27, of course.
