Steven Gerrard described tournament life with England as a “five-star prison”.

Wish I'd made that terrible career choice.

Wish I'd made that terrible career choice.
Entirely my point! He's quite well rewarded for perhaps putting up with a bit of lad bantz, the occasional telling off from your boss and the monotony of the travelling and living out of suitcase that a footballers life can bring.

I think a lot of people on here are cutting him way too much slack because they simply don't like Southgate and because White once played for us.

Maybe the truth throws White under the bus?

For all his tactical issues, Southgate is a decent person.
But doesn't essentially saying 'it's not me, it's his choice, he didn't even tell me himself' thow him under the bus, too? It has set the media and football fans in general on White - how dare he decline England, what a coward to get Edu to tell Southgate, in this thread people are calling for him to never be picked again by future managers (if that even makes a difference to White).

If he is going to lie/not tell the truth, why not lie as 'he's done really well for Arsenal, I know his qualities, I wanted to go with the players I've got - a mix of reliable tried and tested players, and some getting a first chance' a better way to not throw him under the bus?

England players aren’t paid for international games, they donate their appearance fees to charity. Granted being a regular international could raise Ben Whites profile and lead to more lucrative sponsorship deals but I don’t think he’s going to find himself on the breadline anytime soon so I’m sure he can live with any decision he’s made to not play for England at this time.

How have you come to this conclusion?

He hasn't looked anything like an introvert when I've seen him.
Do you know many introverts? They can appear to be anything but, but inside they typically find being around others and being ‘on’ all the time draining and crave solitude to recharge their batteries. To my vaguely educated eye, BW seems to fit the mould to some extent.

Clearly, really quite sad.

I’d have given everything to represent my country, with pride and with one eye of getting as many caps as possible… not some jingoistic nonsense, but being the best at my sport.

The fact that White got Edu to do his dirty work makes it even worse, frankly the behaviour of someone who’s a bit of a knob head.
Yeah. It’s like someone getting their mum to call in sick for them.

You could argue that regularly playing CL football is “being the best at my sport.” as much as world cups are.

If you can mix great mortar but pick inferior bricks, you get a crap building.
And yet....it is possible to create a great building with great mortar and inferior bricks.

This could be said about any team that seems to have done better than one would expect, overcome great offs etc. Off the top o' me 'ead:

Clough's Nottingham Forest
Alf Ramsey's Ipswich

and in the cup:
Martinez' Wigan

And so on.

Hopefully soon RDZ's Brighton

Good point, well made.
Pointing is one of my strengths. ???

(Did you notice it took me a couple of day's of pontification before coming up with the riposte? I was almost teetering towards the well known 'master of sarcasm and wit' riposte till the flash of inspiration  )

Wow. One has to admire White's restraint.

Stupid people too stupid to understand how they could possibly have pissed someone off, then insufficiently motivated to make amends.
