I don’t like the Yankees but they showed some real class during yesterday’s game at Yankee Stadium against the Diamondbacks. With the “United We Stand” message on the electronic boards the Yankees fans stood arm in arm singing “Sweet Caroline” , which is the Red Sox anthem, at the end of the third innings to show their solidarity with their Boston rivals. Shows how powerful sport can be.

I’m going to see “42” tonight, the movie about Jackie Robinson at the Brooklyn Dodgers. Got good reviews so far – so hoping it lives up to them. There are still New Yorkers who are angry about the Dodgers move to LA over 50 years ago.

I know Las, I know. I've still got him in my fantasy team.

But its like football here, when players who are cult heroes make a move purely for money, and in Albert's case more money than he is ever really going to be able to spend.

What did you think of the movie?

It was good. Very well acted and the baseball action was excellent but I’m not sure how historically accurate it was as some of my American colleagues said that in reality Robinson was never really treated that badly by his fellow players, most welcomed him. Obviously there were racists in the crowd but it seems Robinson himself never felt it necessary to play the race card.

What I couldn’t help thinking about was remembering when I went to some Brighton away games about 15 years ago was how little things had changed in 50 years with some of the racist chanting that went on. It is getting better now but films like this remind you that it’s still out there today.
