She was certainly the most unpopular. Even when she had her biggest majority, barely a third of voters actually wanted her enough to vote for her.

About the same as any winning party !

Given the various levels of vitriol on this website and others posted in the last 24 hours it seems difficult to imagine that she was the most popular ever post war prime minister and the first to ever win three general elections in a row. All i can say on that is thank god we are governed by a democracy that allows general elections to pick the right pm with the right policies for that time. Could you imagine what a state that we would be in if michael foot or neil kinnock had become leader - god help us all - if he hadnt been banned by them and their marxist pals.

Well Gormless Brown was unelected.

Lets look back at 1979 and the Winter of discontent when we had a Labour Government, rat infested rubbish wasn't being collected and just left in the streets, body's weren't being buried and storage warehouses were having to be used, we had power cuts affecting the whole country, NHS workers blocked Emergency access to Hospital affecting the lives of patients. I was 20 at the time of the winter of discontent and remember it well. Labour failed and broke the country, by 2010 and after another 13yrs of a "Wicked and Malicious "Labour government and we were once again broke and the country on its knees. As for the miners strike you can only blame Scargill who went against the rule book he wrote in calling for a National strike and sent flying mobs to attack other miners who didnt wish to go on strike and wished to follow the Unions own rules. Maggie wasn't perfect but Socialist Labour is the worst form of Government.

LibLabCon are all the same. They're traitors and quislings. They don't care about the people of this country, they care only for power.

Correct

Pork pie land.
If that is true, I wonder how many disabled people will be robbed of their benefits to pay for it? All in it together, eh?

All rather emotive, given that no legitimate claims will be affected. Only the scroungers who get onto a good thing, and never get it taken away when they are no longer in need. Well that is what the intention is. If it stops the people who claim only to be seen playing football etc., than it gets my vote.

I am working from memory here, so not able to bandy stats, but I believe your stats are the percentage of the votes, not of the total electorate. Even with your stats though, less than half of the voters wanted her. Your stats show that to be fairly normal for any winning party, but although I don't think there are stats available, you should maybe acknowledge that there's never been a prime minister who's been so detested by many of the 60% or so who didn't vote for them. Look at the 'Was Thatcher good for Britain?' thread on here - there is far more bitter opposition to a prime minister than you would normally expect; not quite a majority, but uncomfortably close.

Anyway, if you're looking for more stats, please count me as one more who danced in the street yesterday!

have decided to give this one a wide berth but can someone answer a question for me?

does the thread title keep changing?

Yes, yes it does. Thatcher divides opinion like no other, even amongst NSC's moderators.

I think there are many who would happy to do it for a fiver (no extra charge for the stake!) and save their country £7,999,995!

If she could afford an apartment in the Ritz, why can't she and her family pay for her own funeral?

hmmm, seems like an abuse of 'power'. surely that's up to the thread starter? oh well, ho hum. carry on....

I agree actually.

The thread starter called it, "Thatcher DEAD". A simple statement of fact, with no positive or negative slant.

It was subsequently changed by somebody to "Baroness Thatcher RIP" which is fair enough, but then to the loaded "The Inspirational...." and "The Great...." which is conferring an opinion of the thread starter that he did not choose, so I've changed it back to something neutral.

There is a large proportion of the payment from her estate if you read the news articles.

Good, I hope its a very large portion, she could use some of the 250,000 quid a year and 50,000 quid a speech she got from Philip Morris after she was turned on by her own party.

Now announced on the news that we are to be subjected to a state funeral in all but name. Seems like she became part of the establishment in the end.

Waste of taxpayers money.

I work in Construction, have done since 1974. Working class and have been through the Lab and Con eras. I really thought that i would earn a better living under Labour......you know "Look after the working man" etc etc. I was on a better hourly rate and a better wage in comparison in the 80's. The last five years of the Labour term my rate has not changed.
Meanwhile Bliar is a multi multi millionaire, gets over 12m a year, gets 2m a year as an advisor to JP Morgan, gets back handers all over the world with his dealings.
Brought in all the Human Rights and his wife promptly opposed them and made a fortune as a Barrister, fighting against his policies.
Then we had McBroon, Darling, Gorbals Mick, John Reid and the rest of the Scottish Raj running the country. Brown and Darling's constituencies were in Kilcaddy/Clydesdale and Edinburgh West.
So, England is the only country in the civilised world not to have it's own Parliament, meanwhile Scottish, NI and Welsh MP's can vote on English only issues, English MP's can not vote on the other UK countries issues.
Meanwhile under their reign, RBS has been bailed out, Browns local building society The Clydesdale, the boundaries for the oilfields changed (yes some fields are in English waters) and much of our naval contracts were moved to........yep you guessed it...Scotland.
England gets less benefits per person than the other 3 UK countries, because we are out voted (about 118 MP's from the 3 other nations are allowed to vote) and as you know, we pay for prescriptions, hospital parking etc.....the others do not.
So you can wobble on about what happened over 20-30 years ago, or take out your anger on the here and now.

Can we do both?
