Quite agree with the rest but a slight issue with the above. Section 28 was passed under Thatcher but quite a ludicrous law. A myth has built up that it applied to schools but it didn't. It only applied to local authorities. It was never applied and appears in retrospect a PR exercise to appease some bonkers frothing at the mouth Tories in the shires and the Lords. I'm not defending her but I think it highlights a weakness of Thatcher. I doubt she thought about gays for less than ten seconds and just went along with the tide.

I have read she distrusted Archer (as did Tebbit) and his public profile was always much larger than his power. I think he only made it to deputy chairman and was there really because the old dears liked him. Archer was also quite left of Thatcher politically.

Aitken well...... He was kept very much on the back benches under Thatcher. Well documented that he dumped her daughter and was famously the man that made Carol cry...

Only got in the Cabinet under John Major.

Fair enough, I must admit a secret admiration for "shagger Clark" - astute historian and did he not do the tricky mother and daughter "double" once, sure it was in the NoW.

She was also the first modern PM to use the army (SAS) on its own people in the Peterhead riot.
Nicely tailored time slot there, I assume by modern you mean only between 1979 and 1990?

...and rescuing a 56 year old officer from the grip of out of control convicts, is hardly using the army against the people, is it matey?

A large proportion of which is subjective, lacks context or is factually false. I suggest you do Google, you may get some facts right. I would respond to each point, but sadly I know you will never concede a point even if the truth were laid in your lap.

Thats up to you me ole mucker, I'd rather you did not respond to each point (kill me now). I actually would concede a point, hey, look below - I just did!!!! Love the fact you are accusing me of lacking context and being subjective on NORTH STAND CHAT - big LOLS - thanks for that beauty.

Hand on heart, none of those points I made up to be deliberately false, quite happy to say I have probably made an error, but hey its easy to snip from the sidelines.

She set a precedent and in many views a dangerous precedent by using our own UK Special Forces on a domestic criminal situation.

Worth pointing out that one of her legacies was to f### her party for years after leaving office. Meddling behind the scenes gave the Euro rebels the strength to screw Major in the end. I'm sure the Conservative party are quite capable of having a grown up unified view on the subject. Unfortunately Thatcher spawned a lunatic fringe that are causing Cameron grief to this day.

Interesting what effect Thatcher dying will have on the current lot. She still hangs over them like Blair does Labour. If you hated her you obviously aren't going to vote Conservative. If you loved her, there is always the possibility (as with many right wing commentators) you question Cameron.

I genuinely think Labour will edge the next election since they are on the way of disassociating themselves with Blair. I won't be voting for any of them.

We are all victims of the fact that Dennis Thatcher had the means and wealth to promote and put that social climbing bitch in the public eye. He was ultimately to blame for what WILL PROBABLY BE THE LONGEST EVER THREAD ON nsc.

I admit I used to. Always quite like those mad Tories who genuinely surprise you sometimes. Both Clarke and Widdicombe verty against fox hunting for instance. But unfortunately Clarke was frankly a c### who was deeply racist, worshipped Enoch Powell and allegedly sympathised with Hitler.

Yes, nothing like a slightly drunk, eccentric toff politician to reinforce that fading sterotype of the English upper class, Brideshead and all that, liked to kill a few foxes / peasants / miners etc - probably lived in Somerset. Tories always did that better.

Lets look back at 1979 and the Winter of discontent when we had a Labour Government, rat infested rubbish wasn't being collected and just left in the streets, body's weren't being buried and storage warehouses were having to be used, we had power cuts affecting the whole country, NHS workers blocked Emergency access to Hospital affecting the lives of patients. I was 20 at the time of the winter of discontent and remember it well. Labour failed and broke the country, by 2010 and after another 13yrs of a "Wicked and Malicious "Labour government and we were once again broke and the country on its knees. As for the miners strike you can only blame Scargill who went against the rule book he wrote in calling for a National strike and sent flying mobs to attack other miners who didnt wish to go on strike and wished to follow the Unions own rules. Maggie wasn't perfect but Socialist Labour is the worst form of Government.

LibLabCon are all the same. They're traitors and quislings. They don't care about the people of this country, they care only for power.

Spot on. And I watched that Leicester Square heap of rubbish grow to 20 feet high over several weeks.

That's the point though isn't it? A great short term, vote winning tactic, but in the long run an absolute disaster in terms of a huge housing benefit bill and the destruction of social housing stock, particularly in rural areas.

Very much this.

I think you'll find it was actually an unprecedented 'mother and TWO daughters' combo.

I work in Construction, have done since 1974. Working class and have been through the Lab and Con eras. I really thought that i would earn a better living under Labour......you know "Look after the working man" etc etc. I was on a better hourly rate and a better wage in comparison in the 80's. The last five years of the Labour term my rate has not changed.
Meanwhile Bliar is a multi multi millionaire, gets over 12m a year, gets 2m a year as an advisor to JP Morgan, gets back handers all over the world with his dealings.
Brought in all the Human Rights and his wife promptly opposed them and made a fortune as a Barrister, fighting against his policies.
Then we had McBroon, Darling, Gorbals Mick, John Reid and the rest of the Scottish Raj running the country. Brown and Darling's constituencies were in Kilcaddy/Clydesdale and Edinburgh West.
So, England is the only country in the civilised world not to have it's own Parliament, meanwhile Scottish, NI and Welsh MP's can vote on English only issues, English MP's can not vote on the other UK countries issues.
Meanwhile under their reign, RBS has been bailed out, Browns local building society The Clydesdale, the boundaries for the oilfields changed (yes some fields are in English waters) and much of our naval contracts were moved to........yep you guessed it...Scotland.
England gets less benefits per person than the other 3 UK countries, because we are out voted (about 118 MP's from the 3 other nations are allowed to vote) and as you know, we pay for prescriptions, hospital parking etc.....the others do not.
So you can wobble on about what happened over 20-30 years ago, or take out your anger on the here and now.

I'm with you on this, Soulman. And my working-class, council house father-in-law always felt he was better off under the Tories than ever he was under tax-grabbing Labour.

They were not making a mint and that IMF stuff is simply not true. Maybe you shouldn't base what you're saying on limited anecdotal evidence. Try some facts.

Read the Ridley plan or read this Economy: Report of Nationalised Industries Policy Group (leaked Ridley report) | Margaret Thatcher Foundation

People predominately in the south believed the propaganda perpetuated by the bbc read these
Shafted: The Media, the Miners' Strike and the Aftermath | General | Times Higher Education
An untold story? Fresh allegations about state manipulation in BBC's reporting of miners' strike - Nicholas Jones

The conservatives deliberately picked a fight, regardless of how necessary anyone thinks it was to take on the unions, the manner it which it was done was a disgrace.
Maybe try visiting somewhere like Blackhall Colliery to see the legacy of economic policy from the 1980s.

No, Scargill deliberately picked a fight.

And that IMF stuff simply is true. We got a fat loan from the IMF to bail us out of bankruptcy, and in return, we had to do much as Greece has to do today. Cut spending. Cut our debts. I was there. I watched the news. Read the papers. Devoured Question Time. Studied it at degree level. Anecdotal evidence, pah!

Barclay Brothers own the Ritz, owners of the Telegraph Group of newspapers, amongst various other assets.THE COMATOSE BITCH was probably allowed to live there rent free for the last portion of her miserable existence, bearing in mind that both her offspring were out of the country when the human race was clensed and she expired.
