Errrr........Steps, at the switching on of the Crawley Christmas lights 1996-ish, they did a couple of country line-dancing type songs, only about 20 people bothered watching. I couldn't beleive it when they were having huge chart hits a year or two later.

Oh, and U2, Top Rank, early 80's.

Let's see:

Frankie goes to Hollywood
Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
Dave Matthews (although he wasnt very big over here)

and for my sins....

The Feeling

The Wailers at Leicester Polytechnic in 1973; an extortionate 50p to get in, if you weren't part of the ENTS clique.
It was the "Catch a Fire" promotion tour, I still have my free copy (complete with the Zippo lighter sleeve) and have just put it on after soooo......... many years.
Chris Blackwell and Island Records, Yes's road crew - many happy memories of that night.
"STIR IT UP!!"

Thing that's funny about the New Order gig (which I also attended- their 4th or 5th) is that half the audience that night seem to be on here!

And it was at Jenkinson's, in the basement (maybe hence the confusion, if you pardon the pun) underneath the Kingswest/Odeon/Event, with an entrance on the seafront. Definitely! They weren't particularly great, played Ceremony first - the only song I knew...

Others:
The Smiths supporting Gang of Four
The Strokes at the Lift

The Specials (then called the Coventry Automatics I think) were second support to The Clash at Crawley, behind Suicide who were the main support. They were awesome that night which unfortunately ended in The Clash walking off stage when fighting broke out in the crowd for the umpteenth time !
