So our punishment for Attwell’s incompetence, (unconscious?) bias and over reaction is we concede a free kick, go down to 10 men for more than 30 minutes and lose Baleba for the next match. Harsh.

Can we appeal the red or as its two yellows do we need to just accept it?
This has been discussed elsewhere.

Some are adamant we can, others (me included) are struggling to remember anyone ever appealing a yellow card in the history of footballs..

I can only assume that unless we hear that the club has appealed the card (because it was absurd), we can't.
And that, hopefully, will be an end to it.

OK, let's do some research. The AI search engine states:

"Where a Player has been ordered off as a result of receiving two yellow cards and one or both of those yellow cards was awarded for Foul Play, then the Player may challenge one or both of the Foul Play yellow cards. There is no right of appeal against the award of a yellow card for a technical offence"

According to reddit (yes, I know) a club can write to the FA. However there is no indication this is a recognized appeal process. Apparently mistaken identity cards may be overturned.

Have I ever mentioned that the rules of the game appear to have been written by a temp with an unclassified GCSE in English?

Edit: results of further research suggest that a yellow card can be appealed, but for technical issues

And I stopped looking after I found this:

Yes, it was mentioned before that yellows given to the wrong player can be appealed and overturned.

What you can't do is appeal against a yellow given for the award of a 'foul' where there is debate around 'was it a foul'. Just imagine the number of appeals that could go in on a Monday morning

EDIT: I should also add that Jay Williams should be getting at least one yellow every game ... just for being Jay Williams.

Appealing a booking was common place in local football in the 70s and 80s. It was probably abolished when yellow cards were introduced and referees became Card happy🤣

I fully understand why there is no appeal process for a yellow card, but you should be able to appeal the suspension of any red card, whether it was straight red or 2 yellows it shouldn’t matter. How in 2024 are the rule makers of our national sport still living in 1974? I’m convinced it is all geared around not making refs look bad. To be ‘fair’ to Attwell it’s the 4th official who should be called out.

I dont think bias comes into it - it was just a bad decision. I think what is wrong is that VAR can't review a 2nd yellow - that's just daft. VAR is there to correct any major errors - to exclude 2nd yellows from the process is just silly.

I have listened several times to the coverage on MOTD re the second yellow/red for Beleba.....at 51 minutes did the commentator say "that's a red for the black player ?"

does no foul committed not count as technical issue? i know. but there wasn't. or one could argue the Bournemouth players was committing the foul, sliding in out of control. bit silly but so was the yellow.

what we should be asking is why the VAR "obvious error" doesn't count. had it been a straight red there would have been a review. we should also be asking when the authorities will introduce bans or other consequences for play acting, because if the Bournmouth player had simply got up there's be no card.

I Don understand why 2nd yellows aren't subject to VAR. They cause a team to go down to 10 men which potentially impacts the outcome of a game, we could have easily been pulled back on Saturday. Just f*cking lazy!
Just watching Sky's Ref Watch and Jay Boothroyd asked that obvious question. The ref Gallagher fudged his response and waffled on about how they wanted to bed in VAR.

Ultimately, they all agreed it was NOT even a foul! FFS

Yep.

Also worth mentioning that this grey area is compounded by not being able to appeal a yellow card.

So a match changing event, can't be checked in game or appealed. pst-game
A real glaring gap, in the aim to reduce the impact of incorrect decisions.

Surely the rules will be changed ( probably after one of the big 6 are impacted by it)

To be fair, Arsenal fans bayed for blood over the second yellows for Rice against us and Trossard against City earlier this season, and I'm not sure their moaning moved the needle at all.
