At a guess i'd say more people watched Totally Saturday than the Test Match but that doesn't mean more people care about the Graham Norton hosted shitathon

when you have a stadium called the melbourne CRICKET ground holding 100,000 people, roughly 70,000 more than the biggest in england, it's hard to claim that you care less about cricket than us

hahaha listen to them.

'no ones watching it we are all watching our wierd football'.

chinny reckon.
Indeed! You can just hear them can't you? "Cricket? Naa, don't give a toss mate, couldn't care less if we win or lose. Same as Rugby Union, no one cares about it here. Or tennis. Or soccer. Or swimming. Or cycling."

*Wanders off to desparately find a sport Australia are good at which just happens to be a cross between basketball and bad rugby league and which is only played in a country that thinks men look good in vests*

Masterchef and The Ashes both started at 7 30 at night.

So they both went head to head in the prime time tv ratings.

Masterchef the resounding winner.
It's ok, we know Australians are the worst losers and biggest whingers in sport. If you win two of the next three Tests you'll be bouncing this thread and gloating.

Well I don't suppose cricket would do well here if up against 'Britain's Got Talent' or 'X Factor' finals.

Not sure I'd be boasting about that, tbh.

That's right the MCG does hold that many.

Unfortunately for you all its crowd records aren't for cricket, they are for Australian Rules football games.

It's the home ground of 4 AFL football clubs.

All upgrades have been made to accomodate firstly the Olympics and more recently football fans, not cricket fans.

But we shant let the facts get in the way of the truth shall we?

It's not boasting about anything.

It's stating a simple fact despite it being on free to air tv in prime time it wasnt that widely viewed.

Which statistically suggests not that many people really give a toss about it.

Australia isn't the anglo-haven it once was.

The large amounts of Eastern European and Asian immigrants have crated a different mix of people who aren't from a cricketing background.

And thus couldnt gve a toss about it.

I thought it was upgraded for the Commonwealth games?
It was a sell out on Boxing day when I went there...

Ever been to a Boxing Day test?

Boxing Day test crowd hardly even watch the game while it's on.

You are confusing people attending the cricket here with true cricket fans.

They go there to get wasted, look at women in bikinis and to act like twats.

As is the case with most test matches.

Weather, Women and Booze first priority, event secondary.

And those are the facts.

After the Commonwealth games they started formulating plans to upgrade the Great Sothern stand.

Of course Boxing Day is a sell out, its about getting pissed, not about the cricket.

It's why so many people get chucked out by the Police during that series.

I'm sure I've read somewhere that it's a long-observed trait in Australian cricket coverage that they stop watching and relegate any cricket coverage to less prominent parts of the paper the minute they're not winning. Again, not sure I'd be bragging about being sore losers to the extent that they can only enjoy truly watching or reading about a sport when they're winning at it.

Of course, it's also often the case that the worse the England cricket team, the greater the chance of them appearing on the front, let alone the back pages. But let's not go there.

Psssst, you'd better let SMH know then - Sydney Morning Herald - Business & World News Australia | smh.com.au

And Yahoo!7 - Yahoo!7

And Heraldsun - Herald Sun Homepage | Victoria, National Australian News | Herald Sun

Because it's HEADLINE NEWS on all these - and many other Aussie sites.

Still, perhaps these companies don't know their audience as well as you, eh?

For the record, it's NOT top news on BBC, Yahoo! UK, The Sun etc. Cheers.

Same on NSC of course. Plus of course it is Ashes. I can't be bothered to check - but I should think there were far fewer pages for the West Indies test at Lords.

No, what people are not understanding is it's football season and people are focused on that.

AFL kills any other sport in the country for sporting attendences.

And I mean destroys them by a long way.

Seriously a game of AFL is a million times more exciting and entertaining than a test cricket bore-fest.

So why wouldn't they give it more media coverage when the major interest is in that sport?
