The housing market is dictated by supply and demand. Average annual income is £25k, so a couple earning this should be able to borrow £175k, on your reckoning, which would buy a decent first time property at todays market rates, providing, of course, that they have the required deposit . A lot of people earn more than this and will use this spending power to buy the home they want, without being restricted by lending ratios.

Try and buy a one bedroom flat in a decent area in London for that sunshine, you will be hard pushed unless you wanna live in a drug and gang infested area.

If you read the post you would realise that we're talking averages. I should imagine the average salary in a decent area of London is considerably more than £25k.

I don't quite understand the premise of despising Thatcher, particularly when it comes to the age old 'she sold off our crown jewels', 'she destroyed communities' etc. Were we in a position, as a country, to prop up the coal industry and invest heavily in the utilities/services that had seen much neglect? Did we have the finances to do so?

i like the fact that studenty prick from blur is standing for labour while he lends his song to a formally state owned British Gas advert.

I like my selfish cnts to be upfront about it, thats Labours downfall in my eyes.

Whatever you feel about the economics and politics of housing, two people I know both work hard, both earn above the average wage and both cannot afford to get onto the housing ladder. This is plain wrong in my opinion.

I've got my views on why this is, and I'm sure others have theirs but surely we must all agree that the current system isnt right when you do the right thing, earn above average wages, and still cannot buy accommodation. And folk wonder why some members of society think f**k working what's the point?

why do you think that not being able to take out a massive loan because you cannot afford it is wrong?

that is what caused sub prime not Mrs Thatch like some of the Rik from the Younbg Ones on here think.

Owning a house is not some sort of fundamental right of all Englishmen. When was it supposed to be? It cracks me up this place. Soft southern interpretations of left wing politics which involve dumping immigrants on other peoples communities and the 'right' to make a massive profit speculating on property. Hilarious.

People miss the boat in life. Sometimes the boat comes back. Moaning because you miss out on easy money any thicky can get, does not mean it is 'unfair'.

What an original thread. These threads would be so much more interesting and productive if we didn't have Agie, Bushy et al stomping their feet and saying immigrants and lazy people are to blame for the economic crisis. I'm afraid ladies that it is slightly more complex than that, however you choose to beleive no-marks like the BNP who play to that warped school of thought and you go and put a tick in their box.

You and your cro-magnon attitudes are the reason this country is in a mess.

My charming wife works in a housing dept for a certain council not a million miles from where i live, and the horror stories i hear about council tenants etc make me cringe with rage. Would it not make sense to re evaluate tenants who have help every five years or so as there circumstances may have changed. To me council homes are for people who need help to start on the ladder or cant help themselves through various reasons (too many to go into and argue about) ...............But we all know people who live in council homes who are paying subsidised rent. That have flash cars massive tvs, go on holidays all over the world. Thanks to tax payers who are struggling to get on the housing chain. These people should be targeted and made either to pay more rent or move out and let people who need to live somewhere and save at the same time to enable them on the market. Or is that a vote loser

To be honest though home ownership in this country or even more locally in this area do have a lot to do with accident of birth. If you were born in the late 60's to early 70's generation you are much more likely to have bought a place aged 21-25 as it was much cheaper than renting. Then of course 6 or 7 years ago you had this massive boom which allowed those who chose to further purchasing opportunities based on properties they bought for peanuts. The luck of the draw I'm afraid

The average in London is 46k apparently. 3 times this is 138k. You try and buy something in a half decent part of London for this.

the voice of the rental sector. of course you do need a healthy letting market for the itinerants, especially in Brighton where people tend to wash up because they think it is cool.

Owning a house is not a god given right. You have to work and work bloody hard for it. Quite right in my opinion.

We have a very different psyche over here to the rest of the world when it comes to ownership. There seems to be a horrible stigma attached to renting, but ask any Spaniard or Italian and I bet you the majority couldn't give a monkeys toss if the rented for the rest of their lives.

Tend to wash up? That makes no sense. Don't you wash up? everyone has to wash up do they not? And you know what my housing arrangement is do you? No, quite. Another triumph for ignorance Spanish, another winner!

I wasn't arguing that everyone has the right to own property, quite the opposite but if you took the time to read threads rather than being a reactionary little yapping dog you might learn something.

To be fair to him, he may not have had a choice, sometimes the record co have the rights unless you have it specifically written in your contract. I remember Tom Waits couldn't stop one of his songs being used for an ad a few years ago and was really pissed off about it for same reasons.

I think means testing is the best idea. As long as we have enough social housing I've nothing against folk wanting to rent all their lives and I'd rather they do it via council or housing association or a regulated private sector. But yes, if you have got a cheap local authority flat and you start earning more then in my view you should pay more (but this is my view in general). Using it as a means to afford other trappings is not right as with the current shortages it denies other people who could better use the place.
