UPDATE

I have just updated the original post with the following information.

Having written to Paul Barber about clarification of free travel times he has confirmed the following;

"Currently, for our home matches when the cost of travel is included in your ticket, your journey to the stadium can start 3.5hours before KO and after the match it must be started within 4 hours of the final whistle, regardless of KO time. Saturday’s match finished shortly before 7.30pm."

This confirms that I had valid means of travel and therefore, I believe, confirms their actions were entirely unlawful.

I am in the process of appointing a solicitor in the matter. I take this in the hope that they will learn a strong lesson and no one else will suffer similar.

Thanks for all on there for your support. I will update further when I can.

Many GTR staff now wear body cameras, and I would suspect RPOs may be likely to wear them too. Might be worth checking/asking for footage from Southern/GTR.
You absolutely should request the footage. Request it as a Subject Access Request so that they are legally obliged to provide an answer.

I would do this because if they have the footage, it maybe useful, but even if not it creates work for them so at the very least you get the satisfaction of p*ssing someone off who works for them. Secondly, if they deny they have any footage, then it means they can't later use any if it supports their claim. And if they do provide footage after saying they don't have any, you file a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office. The action they take would vary, but you don't want to be in the ICO's bad books, as cumulative infractions or a large enough one can get them significantly fined.

Even, if you don't want the footage, at the very least it would create an annoying job for them that would have legal deadlines they have to comply with. That alone would make me do it, just to p*ss them off.

I'd be willing to bet they come back with "Sorry, we don't have any footage", leaving off "because we've deleted it"

You can’t delete cctv these days. They’re all digital and must be kept for a minimum of 28 days.

I doubt it will be the offenders that trawl through footage and deal with the complaint, normal regular folks in customer care will be taking the shite on behalf of someone or some people that you are aggrieved with.
I always ask myself why someone did what they did or say what they said, maybe they were stressed, just been assaulted verbally or otherwise themselves, were supposed to have finished their shift hours ago and no cover was forthcoming, maybe they were pissed off with being treated like dirt after an evening of football fans and verbal, or maybe quite simply they are Palace fans.
