Ashley Barnes

Your comments are considered and reasonably balanced, and as such carry some credence.

In 2010/11 we missed 7 or 8 penalties. England missed two out of five in the Euros, I think they are easy to score on paper, less so when on the pitch.

As for Barnes, he is a Marmite player, Gus likes him because he carries out instructions given and has a habit of scoring goals. Do I think we should build the team round him? No. Do I think he is a very useful player to have in the squad? Yes, because of his versatility and goal record. Would I be upset if he was replaced by a better player? No.

Looking at your criticisms one by one I would respond:

1: Releasing too slow and poor pass completion. Valid point, but also true of practically all in the squad.
2: Temperament. Valid, but also true of Greer, El Abd and one or two others.
3: Poor complement to CMS. Valid, I personally think Murray would have been ideal, but Gus calls the shots, and Barnes' goalscoring record last season far exceeded that of the Maryport mardarse.

Thanks, I think.

I don't think Ashley is terrible but this 'one of our best players' bollocks, winds me up.
Yes, Gus definitely sees something in him and it is good to have someone who can put away a pen.(Reading aside)
I'm pretty sure that the Maryport mardarse :lolol: would have had a Hatfull here last season if things had worked out differently.

Find it strange that we're all allowed to slate any other player apart from 'BARNES' on here.

No need for slating anyone - constructive criticism yes. But when a player is slated for not scoring enough goals when he is playing in midfield and - (if you have ever been to a game) watch his work rate and the ground he covers then you mark yourself as a fool.

Brezovan - no goals - drop him?
Bridcutt - no goal - sell him??

The last 2 seasons have a been a season too far for Ashley so I'd imagine the next one will be too.

quality.

The goal at 0:50 is awesome. Watching that vid has made me realise how much I enjoyed last season. I can't wait for the this season to start.

PS. Ashley Barnes has become one of my favourite players. His movement off the ball and ability to find space is streets ahead of most players in our team.

Ashley Barnes shoots and misses: Wanker!! Should have passed!
CMS shoots and misses: Oh well, worth a shot.
Ashley Barnes misplaces a pass: Wanker!! Get him off!
CMS misplaces a pass: Oooh, nice try.
Ashley Barnes miscontrols: Jesus! Touch of a donkey!
CMS miscontrols: Gentle murmurs...

This is the crowd round me most weeks. Not a dig at CMS, just highlighting double standards.

It gets very boring. Its no secret that I rate Barnes very highly but that aside, he's contributed FAR more to the team than so-called "more experienced" and "better" players.

He has bad games, sure. But it only seems to be his that inspire such bitterness and contempt. I just find it all very odd.

One assumes Barnes gets so much criticism because Holroyd, Harley and Paynter move out of the squad and we need a target...

If that video doesn't give you at least a semi and have you salivating at the forthcoming season you are either dead or a Palace fan.

Good squad player but should not be an automatic name on the teamsheet - the fact that he is reflects our paucity of really good players rather than anything else. Bit harsh to blame Ash though - he's still young and has another 5/6 years of developing before we can say whether he's a really good player or not.

The Reading pen wasn't missed, it was a good save. And he puts a lot of his pens in the top corner, like against Pepe Reina for example - who exactly is saving a top corner penalty?

You don't like Barnes, which is a shame as he's had a very good couple of seasons now and I see no reason that should stop.

It was saved yes, but it was a rubbish penalty. I knew which way he was going to go at the Reading game - the keeper probably did too. It was fairly central, low and not hit with too much pace.

See this thread to see where he has hit that and others: What side does Barnes usually place hit spotkick?

Barnes is alright. Not amazing, not crap, just alright, IMO. He's still young so I hope he can become more than that. Although I have a feeling I will bounce this thread at the end of the season to demonstrate how fickle people can be.

Also, Mackail-Smith would have been our top scorer last season had he scored the same amount of penalties as Barnes.

With some new signings apparently 'imminent' including a possible new strike partner for CMS is next season going to be a season to far for Ash?

Or will he retain his 'first name on the teamsheet' status?

Discuss.

You're nmot the one my girlfriend sits in front of in wsu? If so she's getting annoyed with the ashley barnes hatred

FRUIT OF THE BLOOM
Im happy to have Barnes in and around the starting 11 and 1st team squad, he more than deserves that.

Like CMS having a full season in the championship will do them both the world of good.

Barnes, the proven scorer and midfield linkup man ... will fit in rather nicely in the 1st eleven with the new striker.

CMS to be a sub, and work on his game i.e. finishing, first touch, reading passes.

CMS is going to rip the division apart this season when the squad is complete, and we get the correct players in to spot his runs early :)

I see the Ashley baiting has started already. How ridiculous. Top scorer, hard worker AND someone who knows how to score from the spot, he has been an important part of our team.

I do not understand why he is held to a higher standard than other players we have, it does not seem fair at all.

Champions League quality passes from Vicente were NOT read by CMS, and the Albion 2012-13 are not going to give CMS better service than that.
