Well in hindsight, no he wasn't! He might have scored by taking one more touch.No but it gives the keeper more chance of closing down the angle,Barnes was right to hit it from where he was.
That still on it's own doesn't really tell you much about the chance IMO. It takes no account of the movement of surrounding players (are the defenders caught flat footed? is the keeper rushing off his line?) and you can't see the motion of the ball. Has he got it fully under control or is it the case that he could easily have taken another touch without losing control?
Sometimes hitting it early is a great move, especially if the keeper is rooted to his line, but here it looks like the keeper positioned himself well after spotting the danger. In which case, another touch before hammering it would have increased the chance of a goal, IMO.
