£50 million quid is a lot of dough.

Can’t believe where Brighton are now…

A good opportunity for the club to strengthen in other areas, but its worth bearing in mind that BHA won't receive £50m in the bank the day he signs. The fee will likely be paid down in instalments over the course of his contract there.

BHA currently owe something like £23m in transfer fees, and are owed £3m.

Most of the reports suggest that the amount of money up front was the reason for the negotiations taking so long and that Albion insisted on exactly that.

I see Leeds fans are claiming White isn't worth 50 mill. I'm surprised at their stance, as Leeds and the Messiah stand to pocket a decent percentage of the fee, for making Ben the player he now is. It's only fair that they are rewarded.

Depends on age, doesn't it ?

White is too old. Leeds get 0%.

He was 21 when there...... Correct me if i'm wrong, but I thought the "aiding in a players development" type payments went to clubs with whom the player was officially registered, not just a loan club.

i.e if we took an 18 year old from Crawley then flogged him later, they could claim % for his earlier development as he was registered there, not for our academy player who we loan to gain experience....... If that were the case does that entitle Peterborough and Newport?

Surely Stains would have a bigger claim than Leeds one season championship loan. And he wasnt worth 50 million last season, only today after a season in the PL he is.

surely those yorkshire chancers arent getting a penny

I think it is linked to age and rules change after the end of the season they turn 23 so white may be too old. It is up to a maximum of 5% I think. So I assume Peterborough and Newport would also get some if some was being paid. I think it is called solidarity payment or something.

Is that last quote right?? surely not? We loan a championship club a PL club development player, who helps them get promoted and they get 2.5% of transfer fee over a year later for his one championship season?

It's a bit of a confusing system but there are two kinds of training compensation/solidarity payments that can apply. The first is a training compensation payment made when a player signs his first pro contract or if he moves abroad before his 23rd birthday (even on a free transfer). The second is a solidarity payment made if player moves between football associations at any point of his career for a fee if over the age of 23. Ben signed his first pro contract years ago and is over 23, so that certainly doesn't apply now. He also isn't moving abroad so again that doesn't apply.

If in the future he moved to say PSG then Leeds would be entitled to 0.5% of the total transfer fee. Southampton would be entitled to 1.5-2%, Newport 0.5% and Peterborough 0.25%. We'd be entitled to 2.25-2.75% (this would be in addition to any clauses in our deal with Arsenal if they were the selling club). It applies at any point of his professional career providing he is sold for a fee.

Domestic transfers are are not subject to the payments. The only payments made domestically are when a player signs their first pro contract, so we'd have given Southampton a payment of £90,000 per year he was their from the age of 12 (assuming Southampton have a Cat 1 academy).

It's also worth noting that my understanding is these fee's are paid by the buying club as an additional tax on the transfer fee and are not taken from the actual transfer fee itself.

Yep, he is worth 50m because he has spent the past year playing against Liverpool, Man U etc and for England. Not for playing against Burton Albion for some 2nd division northern monkeys.

I can see a Spanish club coming in with big money for Sanchez before long - his profile must have gone up with the Euros and we seem to have bought a replacement already.
Maybe TB has a plan to sell on a big asset each season to keep money ticking over.

Agreed. It is interesting that he went straight into the Leeds first team on arrival, before any influence that Beelzebub had on him. I think we should be charging Leeds for the influence White had on the development of the rest of their team.

And would they have got promoted without him?

Apart from the money obviously, shame for BW that he's gone to a basket case club like Arsenal. He'll be surrounded by Arsenal's eternal mix of sub-prime mercenaries. Oh well, at least he'll have an easy chance to shine and move onwards and upwards again

Well said.

I wouldn’t think twice if he was signing for Liverpool, Chelsea, City or Utd. But Arsenal? I agree with you completely that the thing they have over us mainly is $$$.

- There’s not exactly huge daylight between our squads.
- No Europe
- Toxic fan base
- No chance their club is run as well as ours
- And there’s no way Arteta is as good a coach or tactician as Potter.

I'm just going to don my suit of armour, and then say this . . .

That Arsenal will consistently be a more successful side than us. I sill find it amazing that we are even in the same league as them. They are a truly massive club, who although, (by their own high standards aty least), have been through a few unsuccessful seasons), with their gigantic fanbase, and far superior buying power,it is just a matter of time before they start winning silverware again.

As far as Ben White is concerned, if Arsenal come knocking, it is a no brainer that he says yes, and grabs this opportunity.

Arsenal are a massive club in a rebuilding process, they had excellent late season form and are a much much bigger club than the Albion in every single way. All the comments about Ben White being a mug for going there is a step up in delusion from Swindon fans suggesting Greer to Albion was a sideways move.

The fact that Arsenal are signing White would suggest they are rebuilding well to me

We’re all disappointed to see such an obvious talent leave the club - but £50m for a player that cost us nothing does soften the blow somewhat.

Imagine how Southampton must be feeling…
