I did a 4 month tour in The Falklands in 96 & I have never experienced such pride to be British ever before. Lets hope we never have to fight a war over the Islands again but definitely a fight worth having if it came to it. This shows how utterly ridiculous getting rid of our Aircraft Carriers was though. Shame on you Cameron for that.

Sod it then, lets just invade Argentina and sort it once and for all
No need to invade, just bomb the f***ing shit out of it.

While I am genuinely interest in the politics around the Falklands, I don't really understand the politics of war. When the Argies invaded, why didn't we just tell them to get of our land, or we'd declare war and bomb the f*** out of them? What's the difference with Japan attacking Hawaii, and the US bombing Japan?

Whatdoes 'being British' mean though? They don't contribute to our taxes and they're not represented in Parliament. Yet we pay for their defence.

In a post-colonial world, why are they British?

... because the Goverment in the 1980s embarrassingly backtracked after taking their full nationality away - that's why. I find this whole posturing from all sides hilarious.

Our successive Governments who really want shot of the place because it's so expensive to defend. I suspect they are a bit embarrassed defending the place as British. Why would they continue banging on about "self determination", rather than expressing what THEY THINK. Oh well, not much has changed since the 80s. I'm sure a politician is on the way down there (again) trying to convince the Islanders they would be better off in the long run being part of Argentina.

The Argentinians who have never set foot in the place, until they invaded.

The British public, the majority of which had never heard of the place until the original dispute.

.. and sorry it has to be said, the Falklanders who expect the British Government to look after them, even though they have chosen to live thousands of miles away.

I haven't really got an opinion to be honest, other than it reminds of a village planning dispute rather than an international dispute over land.

If only there was a risk of Bat / Nuclear Submarine Collision.

I would have thought the findings of the recent survey into mineralogical assets deep within the sea floor to be a VERY BIG piece in this dispute coming up to the 30th anni, the hypocritical Kurchner is trying to play word games..................lmfao..........with a country that has been used to that for a 1000yrs..............stupid woman

Let's be honest, Argentina f***ed us over. Had Chile's military not been massing along the borders, Argentina would have sent their main full-time forces to Falklands.

if that's true then there would have been a few more casualties on their side.

Pork pie land.
Easy to say. Will YOU be fighting?

No I am too old I am afraid. However, I actually tried to sign up to go last time (I had many friends out there in Navy and Marines) but they would not accept us as they said it would be over before we were ready. I was not interested in joining a peace time army.

I do have two sons who would probably get called-up if it developed into a full scale war this time. They are not stupid enough to join-up at the moment to get sent to fight in futile wars, even though my wife's family have a long history of joining the Army.

And what if they have lazers, and sharks, and sharks WITH lazers ...

If you're going to argue the point that you believe Argentina have a capable and modern military (not so) at least TRY to sound convincing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mD5k105B2Zw Airman, Kabul? I assume you're in the RAF. Then you'd know that this type of technology isn't exactly hard to get, neither is it particularly expensive for a nation. Also to note, why on Earth should I try to be sounding convincing? Oh, and by the way. Who said they could use conventional tactics? Taliban are doing alright with their out-dated AKs and PKMs. The Mujahideen in Chechnya didn't too bad considering the Russian military is one of the largest....See the fallacy in your reasoning?

And for Looney, bombs? What difference does it make. For laser guided, you need someone to be on the ground with a designator. Fancy the job?

i think you'll find it is. the US dont give out the very best toys to anyone at any price, only best friends like the Japanese have Aegis. if its available to export to any country you can assume its well behind the state of the art and we should be able to defeat it. hence the big fuss over the deployment of Dauntless, replacing exist ship, away as its a couple of generations better than anything the Argies have.

Or you do what the British government does and allow a defence contractor to sell the latest technology abroad but ensure there are "backdoors" put in - and yes it does happen !

The Falkland Islands were first setted by the British in 1765, long before people arrived from the United Provinces of River Plate. Indeed, the British were the first to land on the Islands as far back as 1690 and that was way before the French arrived in 1764.

Argentina wasn't a proper nation until 1862. The River Plate settlers acknowledged the British sovereignty of the Islands and it was only because they started pirating the United States whalers that we had to assert that sovereignty.

The Falkland Islanders have every right to the Islands under International law. Their rights under prescription supersede any claims by the Argentine Government.

Is the right answer.

The British government should be referring the Argentinians and the supportive quasi-Socialist governments of South America to the UN for attempting to blockade the Islands and the seas around the island...After all, we all know what happened to the Trade Federation in their illegal blockade of Naboo!

In London village.
You keep spouting this rubbish you read in the Gaurdian, the Obvious question is if she tried then why didn't she? That seems to have slipped your and the Gaurdians notice.

Bottomline is its down to the people who live there. Politicaly speaking your f***ed, It may be cool to break up Empires, give people autonomy etc but when they dont want it you are politicaly screwed. Thatcher didn't win the election because of the War, labour lost it. Its not about Land or oil but the people who live on it.

So answer the question. If thatcher agreed to hand over the Falklands why didn't she?

Are you going to decend into Falmeresque conspiracy theories, Like thatcher engineered the war by saying yes then later said no? Why haven't any of the Juntas Generals pointed this out in their Biographies? Maybe because its Bollocks?

Stop talking bollocks, no one mentioned "conspiracies" and it's typical of your false flag tactics to pretend otherwise. The truth is a mixture of incompetence and hypocritical dishonesty.

In 1981 Thatcher removed the right of the Falkland Islanders to full UK Citizenship: British Nationality Act 1981 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Her government also wanted to scrap HMS Endurance:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Endurance_(1967)

and the plan to lease the Islands to the Argentines was only rejected by an alliance of Labour front bench and Tory back bench MPs:

Falklands: (Ridley visit & leaseback) [minister badly mauled in Commons] | Margaret Thatcher Foundation

You are right however to say Thatcher did not win the Election because of the war (which Foot supported). She won it because of the egomania of the Gang of Four. The Tory vote actually dropped from 1979 but the anti-Thatcher vote was split by the SDP.

I've worked a similar system to which you're referring. It is expensive, and it is not an infallible 'golden bullet'.

To suggest that the Argentines could employ insurgency tactics in the Falklands is ludicrous. Afghanistan / Chechnya etc is what we call asymmetric warfare, and requires terrain, knowledge of that terrain and most importantly support of local populace and supply lines, none of those conditions are right in the Falklands. Trust me, I've been there.

See the fallacy in YOUR reasoning? I've been doing what I do for a long time my friend.

Again you use slight of hand to distort what actually happened, Falkland islanders sovereignty was diluted in the 70's with a trade agreement with Argentina, the nationality act made little Impact, the last sentence from your first quote is telling.

"The one certainty of yesterday’s exchanges for the Falkland Islanders was that if ever the “festering plots” of the Foreign Office should reach the floor of the House of Commons, they will be given very short shrift. "

The FO has always been a loose Cannon, it is hardly Thatchers Hypocracy for slapping them down, and Ridley, when what theyve been up towhen it comes to light, HMS Endurance is Irrelevant, as has been posted the Junta made the decision to Invade after they landed on South Geogia and once the Scrapping of Endurance had been Cancelled and a detachment of Royal Marines where sent to the Islands.
