Don't worry, hybrid-x reassures us it hasn't happened, so we don't need to react.
But, back in the real world......... I agree with you. We need to be as sure as we can of what is going on, but to stand back and watch innocent people suffer and die is difficult.

Centuries of misdeeds, such as launching attacks on the French had passed. Westminster Palace had been replaced by decision makers and late night lambasters; some good, some indifferent, of which could be heard, a low bass like drone around the end corridor.
The Security Guard never saw him and no camera recorded anything. Saint-Germain had come for a visit in the catacombs of power. His embroidered velvet coat swished in the light breeze. Like a ghost with ball and chain dragging it along lamentably burdened as if an endless Sisyphus. A heavy thought crossed his perplexed mind. The ghost of remembering and collective amnesia. The Security Guard was watching a film in the early hours; The Deer Hunter, the strings elicited sympathy for US servicemen and women lost in a distant war.
A cupboard creaked along its aged hinges. Nobody was here, yet someone distinctly was here. The sentient hand brushed some rogue clinging dust from the papers. Someone important had said recently the world was outraged by 100 years of chemical weapons usage. Saint-Germain looked at the figures written on the yellowing paper. They recounted how the Vietnam War had; devastated three countries, killed 4 million people (mostly poor rural farmers) and 11 million gallons of Agent Orange were dropped, effectively destroying the ecology of vast tracts of land. The ghost uttered a long sigh as if to rebut any inkling of this collective amnesia: history is for story tellers, some true and many embroiled in falsehoods.

The Immortal Count fixed his eyes on the rain howling through the windows. A barely audible clap of shoe sounds echoed off the walls, followed by a haze of silk and velvet stalking off into the dark.

Chemical weapons are the tip of the iceberg, it's biological weapons, falling into the wrong hands that will result in (to quote H.G.Wells) the rout of civilisation, the massacre of mankind.
As early as the 14th century, plague infested bodies were being catapulted over city walls. There isn't much that man won't stoop to, unfortunately.

As a matter of interest , IF it is proven, 100% guaranteed, that it was the Assad regime that committed these acts, would you still not back any military action?
If not, what exactly would you do?

Any intervention in Syria would be a disaster. I very much doubt it can be proven who was responsible for the attack but if it were the Assad regime, I would apply sanctions and offer humanitarian aid.
The US and UK are not motivated by humanitarian concerns - if we were the Saudis, Bahrain, and all the other vile thugs our government is happy to be best buddies with would genuinely have cause for concern.

I confess to being absolutely clueless about this issue but can anyone answer me this please - can we afford it? Does the UK get reimbursed by the UN for doing its work (assuming the UN approve action of some sort).
I thought the military budget and personnel was at breaking point as it is. And as bad as what's going on over there I really don't want more dead soldiers fighting a dubious war.

Probably not - but given the death toll and omnishambles in Iraq, are you seriously say a Western Intervention, more funding for the Islamists in the rebel forces, an escalation of sectarian conflict and even more incentives for the Arab and Muslim nations to trust us even less than they already do would be a winner ?
