Well, I think Sarmiento showed more last lesson than Fati has this season. And we sent Sarmiento to the Championship.
What was your favourite Sarmiento goal and assist in his 12 appearances for us last season ?

Would you be saying that if he was a 'normal' 21 year old, do you think? He's scored a few decent goals for us and was starting to look very at home at this level before he got injured. If he had come through our academy I think we'd all be very excited about him. It's his history that makes him feel like a bit of a flop- he's a year younger than Adingra, for example.

I think he'd be a decent permanent addition if the numbers work. I just don't see how they can.
It’s not his history that makes him feel like a flop , so much as the standard of his performances relative to how much he is reportedly paid.

You are right that if he was an ex academy player his contribution would be considered ok. I guess it comes down to what factors you use to assess if you think a player has done well - for some level of investment is very high up the list , for others age.

I thought he was getting better and better before the injury. It’s not his fault the stupid money that Barcelona threw at him as a teenager. He’s clearly still not 100% fit.

He’s contributed just as much over the last few games as Adringa IMO, who seems to be getting away with being pretty shite since Afcon, Solly walks back into the starting 11 IMO.

I find this comment about Solly odd. Like Fati, he'll be coming back from serious injury - so I doubt he'll be quickly back to his old form.... erm, like Fati. A Fati playing like he did before his Barca injury VS a Solly playing like he was before his big injury? They'd obviously both walk back into the starting 11.

Fati has these 10 games to contribute something significant to a Top 7 finish for us, then the loan would have been a success. Hope it happens.. but I have no confidence it will.

The one advantage Solly has is the fact he's been through this injury before, he knows his body can cope and I don't think we will see any lack of confidence when he comes back, he may take some time to fully find form but he'll be trying from the get go.

Fati is suffering from this constant cycle of injury, getting back to fitness and finding some form then getting injured again. It's taken a toll on his confidence in his body, so we are now seeing him playing within himself, being cautious because he doesn't want to injure himself again. He'd started to show signs he'd got over that mental barrier earlier in this season, then picking up another injury has put him back to square one. Unfortunately with just 10 games to go this season there isn't the luxury of time for him to get that confidence back again.

I meant once fit Solly walks back in at the expense of Adringa, who IMO has been quite poor since Afcon, although to be fair I think he is our 3rd choice winger when Mitoma and March are fit.
I don't see Fati as a winger.

Disagree with that comment. And yes, the Championship where Sarmiento has not pulled up any trees at two different clubs and is now getting a few minutes at the end of Ipswich’s games.

I think it’s unfair to say Fati doesn’t have the right attitude or doesn’t care etc, he’s clearly suffering a massive loss of confidence hence the lack of desire to take defenders on etc. but I do think he’s working hard. I’d like to see him back here next season if possible as there’s definitely a hell of a player in there.

I’ve also seen a few mentions of a loan fee - there wasn’t one.

I rate Sarmiento, but that is nonsense. Don't remember Sarmiento scoring against Ajax.

It may not be a popular opinion but I think that we need forwards who are very lucky to be able to pick up scraps that are thrown to them and convert them. Pedro is the only one we have to have the knack to be in the right place!

Our game is not condusive an out and out striker and when you watch our buildup - tediously sometimes- when our forwards do make runs they rarely receive the killer pass as it almost appears we are hoping the just create a hole for midfielders to drift into

Last game fati made umpteen runs in behind the defence and was ignored preferring the ball to go out wide or backwards. When the ball was pinged at Ferguson every ball he had to reach for

Of course bottom line is we are in a terrific position and doing far better than most of us expected so really who cares if we struggle to score goals at times and like playing triangles at the back.

Our model is buy young players, get a couple of decent seasons out of them and sell them on to buy more young players

My big concern is Gross. As we are half the team we are when he doesn’t play and we so rely on him when he goes , like Mac Allister and Caciedo, we have no one who could fill his or their role.

But it’s all good

Agree..

As for Simon, he flatters to deceive at times and still seems very raw. Solly is a better winger and Mitoma too imho.

What a load of tosh. Sarmiento with his 2 assists in 19 appearances for the Albion, vs Fati's 4 goals and 1 assist in 23 appearances for the Albion.

Fati may not have lived up to the very high expectations he came with (so far), but some of the crap people have come out with to criticise him is insane.

Sounds obvious, but all of these young players will go through fits and starts of form – good and bad – and we need to learn to accept that. Look at Fergie – sensational last season and now hasn't scored for what, five months or something? Fati and Adingra are the same. There's a fair chance that, if he'd stayed fit, Jack H would've struggled in some games – it's just they way they are developing and learning. Outside of the club, look at Caicedo now – he's dip in form can't *just* be because he's relocated to West London/Surrey.

I'm pretty critical of Fati, but I totally accept injuries and inexperience will have played a part. As has being shunted out on the left.

The reason i'm critical is that I think we should expect a higher standard from loan players. If they aren't well ahead of what we've got, then let's not bother.

We're a buy young players and sell most of them type club yeh? So every time we're playing one, there's the opportunity cost. We're not bringing through one of our own.

So even though Colwill did well for us, I think it was a mistake. Van Hecke would be bossing it even more now had he had an extra season of PL experience.

And with Fati I think the same thing applies. Had he been exceptional, then yes, let's send Sarmiento on loan and look after the short term while we're in Europe. But even though he's offering us more than Sarmiento probably would now, we're better off bringing through our own.

There's also the opportunity cost in terms of money. That extra £10m or whatever the fee was, could have been spent on landing one of our targets. Again, a player we can play, bring through then sell if we need to

Pay attention! Post #2618 informs us that there was no loan fee.

I'd be all for keeping Fate next season. I think we have seen flashes of what he can do and the ceiling is high. That said surely he'd have to take a pay cut as we cannot afford Barca wages on a permanent basis.
