Personally I think he adds something to the game and he is not a dull player to watch. No-one is forcing anyone to support him, but I find this loathing of him to be rather amusing. It does seem to border on jealousy at times.

As for him wanting England to lose, that came across as a bit of competitive banter. I wouldn't expect anything less from a Scotsman and vice versa if there was a role reversal.

Anyway, who cares? He is 21 years old, a very promising talent and is in the quarter final stage of a grand slam. I think that says alot about the views of his detractors. Long may he continue to rub the very precious up the wrong way.

I can only speak for myself, but I can never understand why people use the jealous thing. When people express a negative opinion about someone, oh they must be jealous. It is just possible to perhaps not take a liking to somebody without any other meaning. I don't have a personal vendetta towards him, and to be perfectly honest couldn't really care whether he gets knocked out or goes on to win it. He's done well so far and good luck to him. It is nothing more or less than that.

I think we are a bitter nation and the tabloid press do their best to stir it up. There seem to be only a handful of top athletes that the English/British public take to. More often than not there is an overriding feeling that the person is in a privileged position and we can do or say what we like about them. The sheer bloody mindedness to make it and compete at the top level and we underestimate how much dedication, sweating blood and tears, that these guys put into their sports and dismiss them as losers if they do not reach number one. Only a small proportion of clubs/teams/athletes will ever reach the top.

Look at the witch hunt of Flintoff when he was as pissed as a newt after winning The Ashes or the sustained campaign against Beckham when he got himself sent off against Argentina.

The gutter press like success stories, but they much prefer ‘failures’.

US, I don't think mediocrity is the right word. Only a small handful of athletes will ever make it to the top. Murray will not be a failure if he falls at the quarter final stage and Henman was never a failure having been one of the most consistent players at Wimbledon for almost a decade. Unfortunately he was not in the same class as Sampras and Federer. That is not mediocrity.

We under achieve in virtually every sport invented by Man. Mcuh smaller nations with far less money available achieve far far more, there must be a reason for that and the pc Labour world of everyone being equal , ie, average means we have a bleak future for the next generation in all sports.

The failure starts in primary schools where competitive sports days are discouraged, so as not to embarrass the physically inept. I always argued with teachers that thick kids should be allowed to copy in exams, so that they weren't embarrassed by their results.

But you are way off the mark blaming the current government. This attitude goes way back to the late 70's, early 80's, and was the result of misguided liberal thinking.

The state of sport in schools was also fatally harmed by the policy of selling off school playing fields, and we all know whose fault that was.
