Amy Winehouse

SO what should she do? do the gigs in a f***ed state, be late, etc,etc or cancel the tour and try and sort herself out? she's in a bit of lose-lose situation with some people

No, she should bog off and take up a profession where she is capable of satisfying the requirements of the customer.

You are correct otherwise, and I do not have to reserve sympathy for every screwed up person who mis-represents themselves in their profession. Business, as they say, is business. If a plumber turns up to fix my kitchen tap and messes up because they got bladdered the night before, is that plumber in a "lose-lose situation with some people" ffs??

I had to work at mine so I could pay her to entertain me?? And she wastes my valuable time and money? "lose-lose" for me deosn't work, though you can fawn over no-hope LOSERS and kiss their celebrated arses if you want to.

Amy's a fool. A fool if she thinks she can manage her own professional life, she needs a manager to escort her through her gigs and public appearances, and she needs a bloody good lock on the front door at home for all other times, so she can't get out. An adult babysitter if you will, keep her off the booze til after the gigs/appearances. Problem is if the public has already written her off - which sadly seems to be the case.

I'm clearly missing something here...you're saying I'm a miserable bastard because I think Amy Winehouse is a shit singer?

I don't. I think you don't much like music if you think she's a shit singer. Ignore the hype and the self-destruction - she's a got a great voice. Find somebody, anybody, in music that disagrees. Even if you don't like her music, to claim otherwise seems stretching it.

I like her and her album's brilliant. i would never see her live at the moment as it's quite obvious what would happen. Why would you buy tickets to her show not expecting this to happen? Most good musicians are f***-ups if you don't like the unpredictablity don't go to the gig or go to some bland as f*** that you'd prefer, i'm sure Paul Potts is coming down soon

There are some tracks which she does exceptionally well, often old soul tracks or reggae (Monkey Man). There others which her voice is not suited to at all, and after a few lines I have to either fast forward the cd or change channels....

Are you suggesting that bland musicians are reliable and 'interesting' ones have a given right to be unreliable??

For most good musicians to be unreliable, if that's a general expectation, then perhaps it should be stated on the ticket before you buy it.
Or conversely, if they want you to come back and see them again and pay for the privilege - they might want to be consistent and show up and play, good musician-like, properly.

Touring is often a biggest money-spinner for an artist. The recordings advertise the gigs as much as vice versa, and their fame/reputation precedes them.

The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen and Led Zeppelin must be pretty consistent at giving value for money, AND making albums that many many people think are "brilliant". If Keith and Mick's level of drug-taking ruined their shows time after time, I don't actually think they'd be selling out tour after tour for several decades.

What's great about it? I'm yet to hear anyone explain WHY it's such a good voice, all people say is "but she's got a great voice" without qualifying it. I can tell you exactly why I think it's shit - can you tell me what's good about it? She's got a fairly limited range, no great power and, as I said previously, it's horribly nasal. Hence I don't think it's very good. She's hardly comparable to Gladys Knight, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, etc. is she?

A fine example of f***-ups touring, might be Oasis and Guns 'n Roses.
Promoters stopped carrying them after getting repeatedly burned. Fans MIGHT have still been wanting to see them despite any amount of abuse of their time and money, but when they failed to show or play - guess what? Fans wanted refunds, gig owners still wanted the hire paid, promoters wanted insurance for the loss, and insurance companies wanted higher policies paid to cover their payouts..... or refuse to cover them.
Bingo - no more gigs, no more band.

Even John Lydon heeded (mine and more professional) subsequent advice regarding the Sex Pistols reunion tours, and he came to the realisation that he'd have to actually play the tunes properly - and that riots, fights and disrupted 15-minute sets would not 'cut it' anymore for big, money-grabbing shows.

I think trying to tour, whilst holding down a place in Rafa's starting line up was just too much to ask of her.

I didn't pay good money to see them then. Almost, but I walked past the line outside, then went over to see Eddie And The Hot Rods at The Nashville - who were absolutely blindingly brilliant!

When I DID see the Pistols, I was a guest of Lydon's, so I didn't pay then - and they were pretty good, playing for well over an hour and playing properly. If I HAD paid for the ticket, I wouldn't have been unhappy - but I dodged a rip-off swindle back in 1976!
