In a moment's thought i remember being most taken aback or gripped by Sideways, Bicycle Thieves, A Separation and The Third Man. I'd throw in any Hitchcock film as a venerable masterpiece too.

Saw North by Northwest Sunday morning at the DoY, forgot how good Hitchcock was.

Original 'Brighton Rock' with Richard Attenborough

Goooood choice!

I'm going to have to go with Withnail & I as most consistently entertaining and rewarding re-watching. Also a big fan of:

The Wicker Man (original Edward Woodward especially the long cut with the restored footage added back in)
Blue Velvet
Nosferatu (1920's silent movie original film of the Dracula story)
Life is Sweet
This is Spinal Tap
A Clockwork Orange
Dr Strangelove
Apocalypse Now
Touching the Void

Night of the Hunter
This is Spinal Tap
Withnail and I
The Shining
Dead Man's Shoes
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
The Elephant Man
Can't narrow it down to the one.
I agree that most Hitchcock films are also great.

I'm a massive musical's fan, so even though I see on average 100 films a year at the cinema, every year, my all time fav film is joint between Chicago, Sat Night Fever & Dreamgirls..

Although I'm extremely looking forward to Les Miserables which is released this December on the big screen and this could well take my all-time top-spot.

Stating that you are " A massive fan of musicals " is not the best way to go, it may leave you vulnerable to Palace trolls

One of his more madcap and playful ventures, North By Northwest, but still so expertly put together and suspenseful, with the standout scene in constant use in many a film studies course as a symbol of amazement. I watched Vertigo again the other day after it's Best film Ever award, and it is sublimely and darkly amazing. He constantly plays on and with our expectations and is just brilliant at leading us from start to finish without any effort to look away. Just a genius i doubt ever to be mirrored or matched.

The Dollar Store
STALIN, with Robert Duvall playing him. After i read the book, i watched this and it was almost 100% identical, obviously you cant put every minor detail into the film, but was gripping all the way through. ( go left go left) :lolol:

Some excellent films mentioned here. For me, you can't beat a bit of sixties spy thriller. I give you..

The definition of your all time fav film must be a film that you can watch many times over any given period of time without it getting lacklustre or jaded in any way with similar enjoyment to the very 1st time you ever saw it....am I incorrect in this statement??

If so, the only problem with having a thriller or a drama as your all time fav is that when you know the twist or know how the film ends, some of the initial excitement from the first watch & drama must go surely?

Same with anything comedic....very funny the first time, moderately funny the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th time and then it's not so funny.

At least with a quality musical, as long as you like the tune(s) you can watch it over & over & still get the same pleasure, same as watching a concert DVD of your favourite band.
