Considering where Villa are headed now, I'd say they can't afford NOT to have him. He did a superb job there, while spending nothing like the teams around him.

The difference between creative accountancy (a la Man U) and bankruptcy (Portsmouth) may well be the route Lerner is trying to follow. Saying that a club can't afford not to spend money it doesn't have doesn't cut it I'm afraid as our own history might show.

I'm more worried about the knock-on effect if Lambert or Martinez get the gig as I don't think Gus would be wanted by Villa. I'm not overly sure he'd want it anyway - it's a massive job turning a club around without any money, so would he fancy a job at a club that could end up doing a Leeds?

Norwich or Wigan would be tempting for Mr Poyet I'm sure... as much as he's committed to the project, if he can save himself a year or two by being dropped into a role in a well-run premier league club who play decent football... why wouldn't he?

There are plenty more weeks of speculation such as this to come and the overriding fact is that IF the club ends up looking for a new manager, TB made a great call last time and with an even more attractive proposition than before, I'm sure there won't be a lack of good candidates to choose from.

All will not be lost if he does go and the reality is, he will probably still be around for next season!

Seriously?

If Villa came after him, do you honestly think he'd turn them down?

I don't, and wouldn't blame him. They are a sleeping giant, that even asleep, are bigger than I think we could become. I think it would be very hard to turn down.

Strangely I thnk I do. I see no connection betweem GP and Villa that might attract him except the fact that its a PL club. Nad so far accordding to him that's not enough.

I'm sorry I simply don't agree that they were overspending in any way shape or form. You'd never see players like Van Der Vaart coming to Villa, even if they were above Spurs consistently at the time. If anything I would say their overprudence has cost them.

He won't end up at Villa but you can bet your bottom dollar that bloody Norwich will make a move for him once Lambert leaves, which after reading his comments on the BBC Sport website seems very likely. Whether he will want to go there and take on a pretty tough overhaul of style will be another question.

Not sure how you come to that conclusion when the owner says he cannot continue to fund the size and salary levels of the playing squad as Lerner did to/about O'Neill. Tottenham under Redknapp will do what every club under Redknapp does which is to trade players in and out on a revolving door basis. Levy will almost certainly do a better job than many in pushing costly players out at roughly the same speed that 'Arry brings them in. It is neither imprudent nor overly prudent to not spend money you haven't got. It is simply prudent. Lerner has neither Arab or Russian oil money. As far as I am aware he hasn't got access to far eastern money that needs laundering. And he isn't bankrolling his other business interests by selling the football club into debt. All relatively laudible and I am disappointed today that the press are getting on his back and accusing him of selling McLeish down the river and bowing to pressure from the fans.

It's not exactly a secret that Villa are trying to drastically reduce their wage bill - the last published figures I've seen showed that they were paying £80m per year on wages (out of a turnover of £91m). You mention Van der Vaart, so I suspect you think Spurs are more free-spending? Nope - £67m from a TO of £119m.
Only the Manchester clubs, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal spend more on wages than Villa and they all have much higher turnover (c £120m - £300m+)

It has been widely reported in the press (broadsheets included), with quotes from club figures (including managers) that Villa need to reduce their wages, so I'm not sure why you're so set on the idea that they, if anything, need to spend more! Maybe you could teach Randy Lerner a thing or two about business, but I'd say he has a better grasp of the financial situation at his club than perhaps you do?

I haven't read the whole thread as it will be full of the usual Gus rumour cobblers..

The Villa job is far too big for him at this stage of his career... End of!

Tbh, this is the job I've been most worried about, but I heard on the radio that Villa are expected to go after Paul Lambert.

From what I've read, this sounds very likely. Which then leaves us with the "Gus to Norwich" threads. But, it's not like them to poach members of staff from us is it? Oh wait...

A job with a club the size of Villa, although perhaps not the history of Villa, will come up at least once a season. Gus is the sort of person who won't disappear of the radar even if he doesn't do well with us in coming seasons.

He's got a good chairman, team, stadium and upcoming facilities here, which not all Premier League clubs can boast, and is admired by the fans.

Mr Tron, you've made a mistake here. I made this mistake regarding Blackburn, it happens to the best of us. Aston Villa under O'Neill were spending big on players and wages, Stephen Warnock cost £8million for example. Incredible waste.

First time all season ive been able to wake up and read positive news about Villa. I do feel a bit sorry for AM though as we all knew right from day one this was going to happen unless he pulled a totally new style of football out his arse. Best thing for me is that when I head to Chicago in 2 months for VIllas match it wont be a 90 minute slaggin of AM as he is gone. Lambert is who everyone is talking about but I am not sure why he would leave Norwich for us...but id welcome the move. Some supporters think Poyet....but thanks to NSC I know better :lolol:

I think they could make an enquiry. But i'm not sure Gus would get the kind of freedom he gets at the Albion, lets face it, he has the chance to build an entire football club with us, at Villa he would be under alot of pressure to succeed from day one. As long as the Albion match his ambitions, i reckon he will stay...for now at least. But saying that, if he got a crazy offer, he'd be stupid not to think about it imo. If the worst comes to the worst, at least we'd get a descent wedge of compo! Personally, i don't think he'll jump ship for the first half descent offer that comes along, especially when the jobs only half done here. He comes across (to me anyway) as a man who would prefer to see a job through, but then again...thats just my thoughts on the man, and i could be wrong!

As i said above, i truly believe it depends on TB and the rest of the board matching Gus's ambitions....if they don't, he'll be off...of that i have no doubt.

Hope this is true.

If I were Gus I would tell them to swing their hook (for Gus's benefit if he reads the board :) )

Heard on talksport, Durham asking where should Villa really be???? ERM sorry mate but they were nearly relegated, thats where they should be. Villa are a club that in my opinion, with fans think they are better than they actually are.
