If...... And it's a bif IF Villa come calling Gus will be gone in an instant. Villa have had a shit season but are still a massive club with a huge fan base. If Gus has any ambition to make it in the big time he would have to take that job. He is never going to get a top 4 job. So why would he turn down Villa? Any fan who really thinks that gus has blue and white running through his veins are delusional.

to repeat what I said on the earlier thread, I can't see Randy Lerner taking a chance with a relatively unproven manager but I think he might also struggle to buy a manager off another PL club. He took heavy flack off Villa fans when he allowed O'Neill to walk despite his palpably overspending and constantly demanding more (how rarely do fans understand the concept of a finite budget?). He appointed Houllier which was met with less than enthusiasm and then made the mistake of the decade in appointing McLeish.

What he has to do more than anything at this time is to buy back some popularity whilst being realistic about how much he can afford to put into the club. Everything suggests that there is no money (relative to the lavish spending of other PL clubs).

Thinking of satisfying the fans demands for a more expansive approach (and the hope of some tangible success which they view as their "right" as the biggest club in the midlands) would you really think that they would accept Poyet?

Then again I would be surprised if they could tempt Norwich or Swansea or Wigan with an offer but Benitez or Bob Bradley (ex USA and now Egypt coach) are probably well ahead of Gus and Chelsea seem likely to release their current manager by the end of next week......................? Now THAT would surely keep their fans happy?

Gus is 25/1 and tenth favourite for the job, I would put Ian holloway in that list ahead of Gus too, I cant really see a manager of a tenth placed championship club being high on Villas list.

Yes, I do. Aston Villa are being massively overrated on here, they aren't all that.

A huge club, historically speaking. Won the European Cup (Champions League) and SEVEN times Division One winners.

Overspending? You WHAT? He consistently got Villa to 6th, buying nothing like the quality of players the likes of Spurs or even Portsmouth could afford. O'Neill did a superb job considering the budget he had.

Lerner will want someone 'cheap', not unpopular with the fans and who can at least play better football than McLeish and makes average players play better as a team. If that does not sound like Martinez i don't know what does and if he cant be persuaded (I think he's better than Villa personally), it definitely has GP written all over it. Blinkers off but Villa are in a different league and if he can turn them just a little around so top 10 next year, he'll be a massive success. GP ain't no fool, he'd be gone in under 60 seconds if Villa come calling.

When were they last the Champions? They have history, but so do Notthingham Forest. Doesn't make them a massive club. Aston Villa have been in the top flight for decades, but in my life time supporting football they have been also rans, only when Martin O'Neill was spending big were they consistently in the top 6.

Villa , if you're reading - £5 million upfront and you can have Ryan Harley as part of the deal.

one other thing, do managers really care if they get sacked? Hodgson got millions off L'pool, it didn't do him any harm. No doubt McLeigh will pocket a trouser full of cash today. Poyet would get a large payoff if a failure (and I think he'd do well there at Villa) and walk into another job soon enough. Loyalty is great 'idea' but thinking anyone (bar the owners and fans of a club) are loyal, or emotionally attached to it, is living in dreamland these days.

He massively overspent on player contracts and when Lerner told him he couldn't fund more signings he threw his rattle out of the pram. I understand that football managers never have a big enough budget but the time is approaching when, with the exception of a very few clubs, there will be nowhere for the wannabe big spenders to go. Yes O'Neill did well on the budget he had but the days when a manager could just spend and spend are passing, largely because of the exorbitant cost of player contracts. Villa simply couldn't afford him.

Gus says time and time again that his easiest way of meeting his Premier club ambitions is with Brighton - I feel confident that he would not leave us at the moment except for a job which he could guarantee that he would not be sacked by Xmas. Villa simply isn't a job like that at the moment.

Well of course he would say that in public .. it indicates loyalty, self belief and ambition all in one ... just the sort of thing a middling Prem club Chairman will be looking for. Don't get me wrong I don't think he'll go to Villa but not because of the risk, simply because he won't get the chance this time around ... the timing is pretty crap but still an outsider imo.

I suspect if and when he does get his shot at Prem Management it won't be as Manager of Brighton.

Considering where Villa are headed now, I'd say they can't afford NOT to have him. He did a superb job there, while spending nothing like the teams around him.

No way Gus would work with Lerner and vica versa.
Two completely incompatible people. Spuds...... possibly, but at this stage in his career Gus has no chance.

I would imagine there will be a few names above Poyet on their hit list. Lambert, Rodgers, Bruce and even Curbishley. If they wanted him, I think Poyet would be off like a rat up a drainpipe. Make no mistake about it people, Villa is one of the biggest jobs in the country and one that I think would be impossible for Poyet to turn down. But I don't think they will get that far down their list. There are two or three men who would not cost any compensation at all and we all know Villa are pulling in the purse strings.

I think somone like Gus probably does care about getting sacked, actually I think that almost anyone does no matter what the payoff, but especially a young manager trying to build a career. Look at someone like Paul Ince, his career hasn't recovered after a short spell at a Premiership team.

But do they go into jobs assuming they will be sacked, I doubt it, and Villa aren't the most triggerhappy club out. Their last two managers have been obvious duds from early on but they've given them each a whole season before getting rid.

Anyway it would be amazing if he turned the job down, given the opportunity, but wether he's in the running or not is another matter.
