The Marika Hackman album is in danger of getting played to death in the pub. I note that she's playing at the Haunt next month and it's PEANUTS (well,£11).
I'm strongly tempted to go but fear I may be far too old.

Right, that's convinced me to get her new one. I wrote yesterday that I'm still not sold on her latest single and I too was a big fan of her last album so I was fearing a big let down.

Whilst I'm here, has anyone else heard Waxahatchee's album? I posted about it a month or two back and was listening to it on the way home today and once again blown away with how good it is. I think she and her sister will be big news soon. Also, wondering if anyone's heard the Kurt Vile/Courtney Barnett collaboration?

I'll watch it now but before I do I'm playing my hand...Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge singing 'Help Me Make It Through The Night' on the Old Grey Whistle Test. It's not so much the song but the way both of them play this out on camera. I'm surprised they didn't just stop singing and start shagging there and then. This video is the only one I can find and is rubbish but even still you get the picture loud and clear.

I've just returned to A Moon-Shaped Pool having given it a modest outing on release. The Mrs and I were particularly struck by two Radiohead festival gigs this summer -- Glastonbury and T in the Park -- and they seemed to have played virtually all of their new album at the latter. It's so much better going back to it than my initial thoughts.

Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile - 'Lotta Sea Lice'

A big thumbs up from me. Anyone expecting the ironic, bittersweet wordplay from Barnett will be surprised with this collaboration. It's got a much more conventional feel to it, lyrics-wise and Barnett's delivery is straight down the middle rather than the witty asides as she shares the tunes with Vile. The first track from the album is the opener 'Over Everything' but this Americana-tinged track 'Blue Cheese' is my favourite.

Beck - 'Colors'

He's cheered up considerably since the last album. Every track on the album is an upbeat pop affair which sees him plunder 80s riffs and hooks aplenty. Trouble is, one or two tracks aside, it's a pretty forgettable collection of tunes with very little to hang your hat on. I'm quite disappointed with this.

It's interesting how a live performance can re-shape your thoughts on the recorded material. I remember an of Montreal album sounding weak, chaotic and disjointed. After I saw them perform it at the Concorde it all made sense. I think it was the Paralitic Stalks album.

And I love Moon Shaped Pool. I think it's a very strong album.

Re the former: I'm going backwards on it - liked it more when I first heard it, now rating it 6.5/10. Re the latter: the tracks I've heard are pretty good. More of a Barnett than a Vile fan, but this seems to steer a line down the middle, with entertaining words and jangling guitars and, for me anyway, thankfully not too many guitar wig-outs (mainly keeping the songs at under 5 minutes).

Now what do people think of the new Go! Team song? I absolutely love the Go! Team and, therefore, I love the new song. They keep finding ways of tweaking the formula just a tiny bit and coming up with great pop.

I defer on all things Go! Team to my 15 year old. I think he's their biggest fan. I'll check and report back.
