Shamir Bailey - 'Revelations'
You know that line in the Beatles song 'Help': "when I was younger so much younger than before...but now these days are gone and I'm not so self-assured"? I think this sums up the new Shamir album perfectly. Gone is the bubblegum pop and pastels and primary colours and instead we get lo-fi introspection and subtle shades of darker blue. This is clearly a deeply personal album for him and shows a remarkable maturity for someone still relatively young, even in the pop world. There's not one single track on here that is out of place or lets the team down and the last track especially 'Straight Boy' is a stone-cold classic. I say lo-fi but there are plenty of electric guitar riffs and a few nods to rock n roll and doo-wop; overall though the theme is downtempo but he does it with such aplomb that it's quite uplifting in a strange way. Definitely one of the best new albums out there at the moment.

I’m looking forward to it.....but not entirely sure what it will be like. I recall that compilation of EPs they released some time ago was all over the place....but in a positive way.

FM Belfast - 'Island Broadcast'
This is their 4th or maybe even 5th album to date so they've had a long time to hone their skills and this album is a very tight affair musically. It's also one of their best with the Icelandic band in fine form with their synth-pop. I think they now deserve their place amongst the really great Icelandic acts: Sugarcubes, Gus Gus, Sigur Ros, Of Monsters and Men, Soley and Emiliana Torrini.

Bjork's new album is as you'd expect. Just stunning. I'm firmly of the belief that her contribution to pushing pop boundaries is every bit as important as the likes of David Bowie or Madonna.

Another album that has only just been released that needs serious attention is the Jim White 'Waffles, Triangles & Jesus'. I think it's probably his strongest album since 'Drill a Hole In That Substrate' if not his debut album 'The Wrong-Eyed Jesus'. Definitely ones for fans of bluesy Americana and Southern Gothic.

Getting a tad bored of these Orchestra revamps in the form of Elvis, Roy O, Kylie etc but most recently Aretha and Midge Ure.
Have to say I feel the latter is the most beneficial of such treatment.
Ultravox with strings seems to work.

Spent most of this weekend listening to Dan Avery’s DJ Kicks album. I bought it some time ago but forgot about it. It’s in line with his techno sound when he plays out, and not Drone Logic, and brooding and rhythmic; I recommend it to any techno head.
