I have noticed a lot of albums are shorter these days, clocking in at 40 mins or less. I wonder if this is due to the vinyl renaissance i.e. 20 minutes per side is the optimal for sound quality?

New albums I've bought recently include Hugo by Loyle Carner. His best yet, I think, a brilliant album - moving and soulful.
Then there's Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who have released their first album for nine years. I am an unashamed fan, and am not disappointed. Lovely album.
Gabriels' new album is as lovely as I had hoped after seeing them this summer. Absolutely brilliant.
Meanwile, Arctic Monkeys...I love all of their first five albums and had hoped that Tranquility Base was going to be a 'hiccup'. Unfortunately not, The Car is dull elevator music, and Alex Turner's voice these days...just stop it. Self important crooning bollocks.

This album is dividing Tubthumper Towers. I like it but it took a few listens.
As an aside, they seem to have become a huge live act over the past few years. Their UK stadium tour sold out quickly...all 15 or so stadiums. And across europe and the US they have moved up into the huge arenas and sold these out quickly. They last played Berlin on Tranquility Base at the 3000 Columbiahalle...post pandemic they sold out the the 17000 Mercedes Benz Arena in a day. Their last album wasnt a big seller, just curious as to what has happened between then and now.
As another aside, Crack Cloud's Tough Baby is my album of the year so far. There's so much to like about this.

Yes, I was surprised how quickly tickets went for all of their gigs. I was online just after 9 on the day when they went on sale, but The Emirates was sold out already when I got through. A shame, as they are magnificent live.
I've been listening to their early albums a lot recently, just so good. I have tried to enjoy The Car, but it just irritates me.
I'm not convinved the last two albums will work in stadiums either. But I agree, they are a superb live act....even when the German venue is packed out with Brits bellowing out every single lyric wonderfully out of tune

I’ve taken it upon myself to listen to as many albums as possible this year, and I’m up to about 160, and have ordered them all in a list. Gilla Band is my AOTY atm, but there’s some very good contenders

If you enjoy the new Loyle Carner album then I’d 100% recommend the new Frankie Stew & Harvey Gunn album that dropped today. Nothing New Under The Sun.
I think the easiest way to describe FS&HG would be a modern day version of The Streets but they aren’t a million miles away from LC either.
They’re also from Portslade and I believe Harvey is a Brighton fan so that always helps. The Streets are my favourite artist ever and I’d support a new form of Ebola if it had a BN postcode so it’s a big yes from me.
Hard to say for sure after only two listens but I would be shocked if it doesn’t end up my AOTY. Maybe not quite as focused as Hugo but incredible production, hard hitting lyrics, almost all of of the features work & I get stupidly happy when I hear somewhere I know get mentioned in a song.
I often repeat myself, and dont remember doing it. I blame old age

Played a great show at the end of the Great Escape festival. I've ordered the vinyl of this album.
The Streets is an easy comparison to make but I think that's selling the local boys short a bit, and I'm a big lover of The Streets. I think they are great and a well under the radar considering they've sold out Brixton.

Yeah, I heard they were excellent, likewise they were apparently brilliant at Glasto too. Definitely need to go when they next play in Brighton. Waiting on the Vinyl too, ended up going for the transparent orange one.
The Streets are my favourite artist of all time so whilst it’s a bit of lazy comparison it was intended with the upmost respect. Being born within 5 miles and a couple of years of them also means I resonate with their lyrics more than I can with some Streets songs. As much as I love OPM it’s an album based on a period of time I didn’t live through.
I’ll also give Frankie the credit he deserves - his singing on this album is much, much better than whenever Mike turned his hand to singing.

Looking forwards to picking up Luke Haines & Peter Buck, 'All the kids are super bummed out'. Out today. Their previous album together was one of my favourites from a couple of years ago.
Also eagerly anticipating getting Guided By Voices, 'Scalping The Guru'. Throughly enjoyed the dozen or so new albums from the last 4 years but this one is a half hourish 20 track complication from the EPs 93/94.
