He is the team captain - who knows, possibly to be the club captain soon - and the current Player of the Season. He would be FIRST on the list for contract renewals.

Does not mean he will sign though does it meaning we could be forced to FLOG him now.

You never know though;

"Guy Butters, Alexis Bertin, Charlie Oatway, Michel Kuipers and Paul Reid are among the players Albion want to keep. Wilkins is confident the 11 on his retained list will sign new contracts.

The Albion boss said: "I'm optimistic but nothing is certain. I see no reason why we cannot come to agreement with every one of them. I hope to get it all sorted within a week."
Don't get me wrong - I would be f***ing cock-a-hoop if Bertin re-signed. With him in the side, our play-off chances are slim - without him, they're a fantasy.

The club would do whatever it could within reason to keep him - especially if he is the captain.

Again, does not mean he will stay does it.

A young goal-scoring central midfielder is bound to have attracted attention this season, if only from better clubs at our level and lower championship.

and I still maintain you cannot have Bertin and El Abd in the same team doing the same job. Its ok having 1 stopping midfielder, which I would suggest Bertin is a expert at, you would then have two attacking midfielders next to him...Reid and hammond!

That does not leave a spot for El Abd

I have been saying this for months, whenever the 'Lynch will leave' rumours surface. Hammond going has always seemed a bigger worry to me. His operation causing him to miss the last few games may have done us a favour.

I don't think El-Abd should necessarily be a starting eleven player though. He is a useful squad player because he can play in a few different positions and is fairly reliable.

I'd pick Bertin over El-Abd every day of the week and twice on Sundays. If it's a straight choice of playing either Bertin or El-Abd, there's no contest for me.

So be it.

If you can fill all the other spaces satisfactorily, as per the midfield you suggest - one I very much agree with - then El-Abd takes his turn on the bench. He is a bit of a utility player in as much as he can play in central midfield, central defence and at right-back. That's a useful weapon to have in your armoury.

But you need to get his contract sorted now as he is out of contract next year, otherwise his value will go down the nearer he comes to be out of contract.

He scores a decent number of goals from midfield and players like that are sought after, so clubs will look at him.

Well, fine. And I am sure the club has it in hand.

Shall we panic when it comes to April 2008, and he still hasn't been offered an extension - or shall we go into meltdown now?
