Just google Graeme Le Saux if you want to know the level of vile abuse that prevents footballers coming out during their playing career. Bloke wasn't even gay. His only 'crime' was admitting to be a Guardian reader. That went down really well with his moronic fellow pros. Such a shame he didn't just nut Robbie Fowler and inflict thousands of pounds worth of nasal improvements on the scouse ****

Fowler’s gesture in the 90s was absolutely disgraceful. Dunno if he ever apologised but he seems to have got away with it very lightly.

Absolutely this. Would take the twitter lynch mob about half a day to destroy his life and career and force him to put on that big sad fake face and vow to continue on his journey of self-education and :bla: :bla: :bla:

Here's a guide to threads, for anyone unable to work out what a thread contains from its title:

Trump – Trump.
Dyson Purifier – this one’s about the Dyson purifier.
Gardener’s question time – dunno.
The dangers of liberalism – some uni lecturer rambling on about Covid, Boris and other viruses.
Official allotment thread – see gardener’s question time.
Albion dressing room would be supportive of gay player – this one contains a load of comments from some angry bloke who is outraged that the thread exists, and the fact that it isn’t about football.

Yes there are certainly some strange threads around at the moment.

For those who can't grasp this:

A gay footballer walks into his dressing room on a Monday. He’s not come out to anyone yet. Not even his family.

Team mate: ‘Me and my girlfriend are getting married’
Player ‘That’s wonderful, congratulations’
Team mate: ‘Do you have a girlfriend yet ?’

The player goes quiet. He is seeing a neighbour of his. The same sex.

He wants to tell the other player this is the case, knowing that player is not homophobic. But if he does it’s out. It can’t be retrieved.

He thinks of the wider issue of not keeping this relationship private. The over exposure of it. The pictures in MailOnline who will inevitably, but with the use of subtle and inside line legal language, want to put it out there for the salivating hoards.

He thinks about the Twitter comments from opposition fans, the shouts from the cars in the street, the quizzing that his family and friends might face from clandestine journalists. He ponders how his life will constantly be blighted by people making comments who think it’s just banter when all he wants is to be left alone like the player who has just got engaged will mostly be, or at least not sensationalised to people who want to abuse and cause grief.

Player ‘No, not yet’

As his team mate walks away the player looks longingly at him. If only he’d been born ‘normal’ like his newly engaged colleague.

The end could equally be.....

As his team mate walks away the player looks at his team mate with a mixture of sympathy and disdain. I won’t allow my professional career to be distracted, he thinks, I want to be the best footballer I can be, end of. He then thinks longingly of his partner, a high performing lawyer in the city and their long standing pact when they met at the masquerade chemsex party in Greenwich village 5 years previous.

We will succeed in our professions due our combination of talent and ambition that we share, we will not be defined in any other terms than the success we achieve in our respective professions. We will succeed, nothing will get in our way. NOTHING.

He spits out some pleghm on the floor, a combination of contempt and bile rising in the back of his throat. “Don’t think I’m coming to your f@cking wedding either” he shouts after his team mate. “I train every Saturday no exception, f@ck your wedding, f@ck the Botox ridden slag your marrying.......I’m going to be a STAAAAAAAAR”.

Good for them eh......

Fantastic for who?

For every football mad gay kid being bullied at home and school, hiding who they are terrified someone might find out. For all the LGB T person in the world who literally live in fear of their lives should the authorities find out they are LGBT, for all those players who also live in fear of being frontpage tabloid news, for, oh I don't no, just about everyone who isn't a bigot

But not for the guy that comes out, who hopefully is not a bigot.

I don't want anyone to feel they have to hide, I hope many top players do allow themselves to be open about their homosexuality. I just think that any player doing that before the World cup is putting immense additional pressure on themselves, and could be resented by fans especially the sort that lost their shit at David Beckham for a silly sending off, if they perceive his coming out to have made it more difficult to do well in the tournament, which it may well have do. I would love for a player holding the World Cup to tell the media he will be celebrating with his boyfriend when he gets home, but before the tournament starts would allow space for negative comments to be made, it would force statements to be made

Same-sex relationships in women's sport seem to be accepted, even between members of the same team.

Impossible to compare though . Lot of Tom boy girls play football . So it goes hand in hand .

It’s like looking at ratios of male gay airline stewards / dancers etc

Numbers always going to be different to what are traditionally alpha male environments

Not saying it’s right but it’s the way it is

I was thinking of the public perception. It seems that for women, appears to not raise an eyebrow but for men seems to cause an outrage for some people.

Dutch Eredivisie player just came out but remained anonymous (so you could say he kind of opened the closet and spoke from it rather than came out, I guess).

"I am an athlete and I only have one goal, that is to get to the highest level in my sport. That could be hurt if I come out now

It’s correct that I am gay, but I’m not coming out publicly because I don’t want people to talk about me and my sexuality like that

It is that small minority of people that will bother you. For example the chants in the stadiums. And my biggest fear is the international story. Why would I put my career on the line because I feel the need to talk about my different sexuality?

As a footballer you want a beautiful career and to make a transfer to another country. In other countries it is often a different story in terms of acceptance than in the Netherlands, in certain countries you wouldn’t get a chance at all"

Reasonable I guess but would still be great if someone actually came out during their active career.

In Brighton there is one player where there was a lot of rumours (like a 100+ page thread on a forum) about him being gay when he played for another club. If that player or someone else in the Brighton squad is gay I hope that the environment surrounding the club is one that would allow that step to happen - would probably mean a lot to many people.

This wasn't an old interview with Locadia, was it?

For everyone saying 'I couldn't give a toss if someone is gay or straight...' That's fantastic – I'm chuffed for you all – however there are thousands of football fans who seemingly DO have an issue with it. And that's footballers don't come out. Of course it shouldn't matter what someone's sexuality is, but that doesn't stop knobheads voicing their disapproval about an issue that has zero impact on their life. Really odd behaviour.

When you opened this thread did you assume that it was going to be about 'the football'?

You can find a thread title that gives you a clue about the subject of the thread. If you were really interested in only talking about 'the football' you would have ignored this thread and found one about football. The truth of the matter is that you wanted to open this thread and be outraged by the 'santimonious', 'moral superiority' and 'virtue Signalling'. I would also hazard a guess that you did this so you could be 'antagonistic' about it.

The fact of the matter is that you have gone out of your way to get involved in a clearly labelled discussion. If you really just want to talk about 'the football' then you've really got to ask yourself why you did that.

Popped onto NSC for first time in months. This is why I left. Pricks like you dragging up comments made ages ago, firing off sarcastic churlish wide of the mark posts glazed with your own smug superiority complex. I was tired of non-football arguing this Board is obsessed with, or at least a handful of posters who dominate it daily. That's all. I see little has changed, except the Bear Pit has been closed ironically. Shame, because that's where 99% of the drivel you post ought to be. See you next year, or maybe next Tuesday. :dunce:

I'm sure you've already been told but your view is archaic and homophobic.

Football is a powerful tool for promoting good causes. Football is about inclusion. Football is for everyone and everyone must be made to feel welcome.

Couldn't be further from the truth, but then you don't know me in the slightest and if I could be bothered to argue with you I'd start by saying your remarks are offensive. But since I don't really care and as alluded, your observation is ridiculous and all my gay and straight friends would laugh at your assertion, there's no point.:dunce:

When many people are saying basically the same thing about your opinion doesn't it make you think you might be wrong?
