So people think CMS doesn't score nearly enough, yet they want someone who scored less goals than him last season?

That makes sense.

Exactly right. He is a league 1 striker and apparently he has returned to being grumpy and sulky. Peoples views are tainted because he had 1 good season where he was playing for a new contract in league 1.

It's not that simple though is it? How many goal saving headers did CMS put in and how much better is Murray at taking up goalscoring positions and how much better does Murray fit into our style of play??

I like CMS, but after a bright start he had a dreaful season, I think we'd have been better off with Murray last year

There is no way Gus would bring him back though, under any circumstances .....

Clearly - but then why is anyone on here annoyed when he gets called a mardy-arsed northern judas ? He made his choice.

It seems he pretty much had no choice, if he didn't want to go bankrupt.

Leaving aside the childish and nonsensical 'Judas' stuff posted by others, I agree that the debate on whether GM is good enough is a very interesting one and I simply don't know what the answer is.

His particular skills are those that we were so obviously missing last season and, on that basis, I'd love to see him back with us. However, there is no guarantee that he would be able to use those skills to their full in a team that will, hopefully, be playing 'top-half' football in the Championship.

Would he be our 'star' striker? Probably not. Would he be a very useful member of the sqaud? Definitely. What should the fee be? The sort of money that would be a bargain if his signing turned out to be a success, but not a great loss if it didn't work out.

Finally, if he were back at the Albion, I'd be sure of Gus getting the best out of him.

Yes - a good squad member.

"1 good season" is bollocks, and a myth that keeps getting spouted on here. He scored at a ratio of 1 every 2 games in all 3 seasons. He was good in the first 2 seasons, and superb in the final one.

I have no idea how you know that.

Good for you. Weird to assume either way though isn't it, without evidence? All suggestions from those closer to him are that he was in huge financial doodoo. There have been NO suggestions from those "in the know" that he just chased the money.

Doesn't change the fact it's a bollocks myth.

He wasn't that good in his first two seasons, he constantly got caught offside. Even if you think it's 'bollocks' you can't deny he was playing for a new contract in his final season and it was in league 1. He's not good enough for the Championship, simple. Barnes is a much better player.

I understood from your posting that he HAD to chase the money. We all know he did it for the money. I was just not sure how you know he had pretty much no choice to avoid bankruptcy.

What does "Good for you" mean ?

Surely all players are playing for a new contract in their final season? That doesn't mean he wasn't trying in his first two and half seasons.

My point is that most players are usually up for it most of the time. Where's Murray often appeared lazy and sulky until his contract was almost up (I know that he blamed that on a long term injury, but I don't believe that).

I did not say you as it happens. I appreciate you understand his decision - and that is fair enough. But Murray gets cut a lot of slack for someone who walked away to our rivals for a few extra bob.

It's not a case of cutting him a lot of slack. He was a player who I admired a lot, during his 3 seasons with us he matured, developed new skills, was a superb first line of defence and scored some fantastic goals.

Fans are fickle, you only have to look at the abuse heaped at Barnes to see that, so I don't expect 'loyalty' from players. Elliott Bennett stuck in a transfer request EIGHT WEEKS after signing a new contract, yet if we saw him in the street we would ask for a photo, an autograph, and probably give him a blowjob if it meant him coming back to the Albion.

Murray didn't sign for Palace because of any affection for them or slight to us, he did it for the same reasons that you or I would do if another company offered us a £300,000 signing on fee.

Some players appear laconic though. Murray had a lot going on in his private life. Remember that he stuck in three transfer requests (two in the first six months, partly for home problems and part due to the Wilkins factor). If anyone has been through similar issues it is very difficult to focus on your job. He then met someone and became happier.

I know many like to think different, but he doesn't owe us anything. It's business for them, an emotional relationship for us though, and that is why the resentment and hostility exists.

Bennett isn't really a good example though, because Norwich were on their way to the Premier League and the move would further his career. Murray moved purely for the money.
