OK Murray got over 20 goals for us in his last season,he knew his contract was ending. How many did Murray score the seasons previous 14 was it...and the season before...not such a prolific scorer was he.
Don't rate Heskey either...scored a great goal England/Germany...but how many did he get last season...we don't need an old lump up front...we need an eager..'I've got something to prove' young 6'2" fast...ideally a season long loan player from a premiership club...the only older ex player I would want is.....welcome home Bobby Z

It was 14 goals, but that was in 29 starts, the season before was 12 in 23 starts. Equally as prolific as the 22 goals in 45 starts in his last season with us.

Totally different, Gus let crofty go to further his career knowing he was quality, and giving him the opportunity to prove he could play at a higher level, he let Murrey go because he thought he was bigger than the club and thought he could strut around giving it large, demanding this and that, and he can't even hold a reg place in a second rate team. Well shot of rubbish.
I don't see Gus eating that big a slice of Humble pie.

Gus didn't let him go, he offered him a contract, but Murray walked away.

Or you COULD look at it as him playing well for us because he wanted US to offer him a better contract. And because he was fit for the first time in years.

Mmm...nah. Not buying it. Not after the transfer requests.

The northern oddball wanted OUT on his bossie so he could scoop a big ol' signing on fee when he moved on for nothing. I don't blame him, most if not all of us would do the same. Its just a job, why should he let affection or loyalty get in the way of the £££ ? Once it was established that Gus and TB didn't value him as highly as he or his agent did, he was always going to follow the money. Thats the game. Gus got one decent season out of him in all probabilty in the knowledge it'd be his last, and in the end, we all benefitted from that.

Actually BUYING him back now would stick in the craw. There's far better out there, Murray is history.

Murray is actually exactly what we were missing last season. I would welcome him back without question. It is not going to happen though unfortunately.

Me too (tho it might have been different if he'd celebrated his goal against us last season...)

Jesus might have forgiven Judas...but I won't!

Not a Judas and nothing to forgive him for.

He did what was right for him and what, in the same circumstances, everyone on here would do.

Do you really believe he should have said '"Palace have made me the best offer but I won't go there because some Albion fans won't like it."?

Murray was a great league 1 player for us. He wasn't like CMS who works hard and chases lost causes, but he didn't need to be as his movement is more clever. Good at holding the ball, defensively and I felt/still feel he has a degree of affection for the club.

I don't care that he left for more money, I do care that he went to Palace but, hey, we all make mistakes and he probably regrets it deep down.

So for me the issue is whether he's good enough at this level and based on last season, he isn't.

Heskey or Murray? Heskey has been ok and has played at the highest level for a number of years, but his best days are long gone, so probably Murray.......just.

But really I don't think either are good enough for what we are trying to achieve

At the stage we are at Murray would be an excellent addition to the squad and probably is exactly the player we want. I never saw anyone win so many headers to hold up the ball, or flick it on, or upset the opposing defence. He is quality in that regard. Yes he is a charmless, grumpy git - he left for Crystal Palace - but he'd do us some good. I was a bit offended about the Calderon / Southampton story but it got ironed out - and so did the Vicente coming back / not coming back story. Think we should all grow up here and realise that very few players really "love the club" in the way that fans do. It's not that kind of game any more. And where do we think Grant Hall's career will end up - in Spurs first team ?? Or at Gillingham in a couple of years ? Loyalty doesn't exist and money rules - that said I'd still be happy to see Murray benefitting our cause for another season.

Leaving aside the childish and nonsensical 'Judas' stuff posted by others, I agree that the debate on whether GM is good enough is a very interesting one and I simply don't know what the answer is.

His particular skills are those that we were so obviously missing last season and, on that basis, I'd love to see him back with us. However, there is no guarantee that he would be able to use those skills to their full in a team that will, hopefully, be playing 'top-half' football in the Championship.

Would he be our 'star' striker? Probably not. Would he be a very useful member of the sqaud? Definitely. What should the fee be? The sort of money that would be a bargain if his signing turned out to be a success, but not a great loss if it didn't work out.

Finally, if he were back at the Albion, I'd be sure of Gus getting the best out of him.

So people think CMS doesn't score nearly enough, yet they want someone who scored less goals than him last season?

That makes sense.
