We are good enough to beat the weaker teams but not once we come up against the better ones.

To be fair, India in India is about the toughest series in the world. The conditions are very different to ours.
We won in South Africa last year and they were one of the best teams in the world. The biggest disappointment for me is that we started the series so well.

We smashed India at home in the last series played here. And beat SA away. India away is a different proposition, though it's more been us being poor than them being brilliant (or the pitches) in this series granted.

We couldn't beat Pakistan at home and they're getting a pasting in New Zealand currently and we couldn't win in Bangladesh either.

Apart from South Africa we haven't won a series away from home since India 4 years ago.

Rajkot was only the second test match that they haven't won since the last time we were over there. Take out our series win in 12/13 and they last lost a home test match in 2010. We're not the finished article yet, the batting isn't strong enough and despite Rashid coming on excellently this winter, we don't have a top spinner. I still see the general trajectory under Bayliss as positive especially if you bring our one day play into the question.
Going to India and winning was always going to be a tough ask. Probably the toughest ask. I know its frustrating but this group still needs a couple of years to mature.

Batting deficiencies and lack of a world class spinner were always a concern going into this series and will ultimately prove to be our undoing.
The likes of Duckett, Ansari, Ballance and Batty are woefully short of the required standard, while Woakes is showing his limitations in these conditions.
The series could now go one of two ways - either England capitulate or the likes of Rashid and Hameed continue to get stronger and England make a fist of the series.

Due to todays poor display it looks like we shall be going 2 -0 down. I expected us to bowl reasonably so as to ensure a lead of less than 50 which we could knock off with the loss of no more than 1 wicket.but that is not the England way.
The numbers I quoted are NOT averages - they're the ICC Rankings.
Ashwin down in 43 batting (1st bowling), and Stokes just below in bowling.
That explains it. I'm more an average guy or a mean guy than a ranker.

142-6 a lead of 8. Root onto 70. Need Root and Hemed to bat all day can't see it happening.

Some players are unable to switch from limited overs mentality to Test playing mentality. Lots of poor defensive techniques on display. Loose captaincy all around the world. No apparent desire to curb and contain by consistently failing to position a third man, with most pace bowlers pitching on or outside off stump. Never seen so many average opening batsman around the world. We are going through a trough of Test cricket at present. Lets hope some real talent emerges in time.
