I’m old enough to remember when the charge that the Tories apologised for the infected blood scandal but hadn’t put aside any money for the compensation scheme was met with howls of outrage. Yet there we go, another £11bn Tory black hole in the budget which Reeves has had to fill.

The Tories really drove the economy off a cliff, didn’t they?

If you're referring to the discussion about what taxes are taxes on working people - no, no it doesn't.

I stated that Fuel Duty was an example of a tax that I would consider a tax on working people, whilst others clinging onto their bright red comfort blankets, were somehow pretending it wouldn't.

I even said something like, "I have no idea if Fuel Duty if it's suggested Fuel Dity may rise or not".

Anyway, let's see if Labour keep to their promise to not raise taxes on working people and keep Fuel Duty where it is for the next four-and-a-half years or so.

I'll hold fire on my "Is Fuel Duty a tax on working people?" poll for now though! 😆
I'm just hoping for a range of economic editing that seems reasonable, and appears to help the worst off without providing a disincentive to get their finger out. Happy medium and all that. (Not Eve Petulengro, though, obviously). Not bothered about newt taxis, or whether you can be a working person if you are asleep for part of the day, etc.

Fuel duty frozen, price of a pint down, non-doms, private jets, second homes and private schools targetted.

Anyone still confused by "working people"?
But…but…but…the Daily Mail said…

Nope.

Not that I was interested in Daily Mail pedantry at any point in the narrative.

In other news, the jury is still out on whether there is life after death and whether the total after-life tax experience will be better or worse that it was, pre-mortem.

Ooh, abolishing non dom status!

They've been and are already moving to Italy, UAE etc. To favourable tax regimes. Not a Reeves thing, Jeremy Hunt attacked their status too. This simply accelerates their actions.

Because Reeves is abolishing domicile rules altogether (accumulated over a century through case law?), residence for tax status will hold sway. Wealthy folk will need to be out of the UK for the majority of a tax year .... but it's more nuanced than that .... and boring.

It seems Rachel Reeves has a clearer idea than Sir Keir Starmer.

I don't hold out any hope that we'll actually see any real reduction in the price of a pint though :(

Back in Sussex
Mrs B, who works in Further Education, said "There won't be anything for Further Education" and three seconds later Reeves announced additional funding for Further Education.

So I said "There will be free cider for the people of Worthing" and three seconds later Reeves spoke about money for devolved governments.

REEVES OUT!

The nation will join you in holding your breath, as you agonize over your first world problem.

Thoughts and prayers.

I have no idea about the debt numbers but so far it feels like a more measured budget than we feared. The hike in Ers National Insurance appears to have done most of the work avoiding the need to do other things. The threshold change from £9,100 to £5,000 is massive.

Note though she has kept personal allowances frozen until 2028 (as announced by the Tories) which in itself raises a lot of tax.

Exactly as I predicted;

Fairly soft impact with largely the right people being targeted but no heavy blows to anyone.

A reasonable first budget given the mess Tory’s left.

As for “working people”

No clearer. Do parents of kids at boarding school not work? Most work bloody hard. That’s why they can afford to send their kids to public school.

But I digress.

All as expected.

Hopefully that cut and the employment allowance changes will help landlords and restauranteurs a little though? I'd be keen to hear @crookie 's take on it.

As an, ahem, keen user of the hospitality industry I want to see it thrive.
