With AV you are guaranteed that, compared to any other individual candidate, the majority would prefer the winner.
In the example given, it's entirely possible that 1-v-1, 71% would prefer the candidate who came second to s/he who won, it's just there were so many candidates the first pref's...
Interesting question actually - though this is mainly because a) I'm a complete geek and b) I need to pass some time while I'm waiting for a call in the office...
Yep - Fiji, Australia & Papua New Guinea is (almost) a complete list of the countries that currently use AV in the exact form we...
blue2 - if you're a supporter of First Past The Post, maybe you can help me understand something that no other FPTP supporters have been able to answer. (I don't just mean on here, I even mean as part of the No campaign). What is "the post"? There is no "post" to get past as MPs can be elected...
Nope, that's absolutely fine. As in the analogy I've used above in discussions with other posters, it would be the equivalent of voting for your candidate in the rounds they are included, and then abstaining in any rounds after they've been knocked out.
Australia (which uses AV) does have...
Me + 1 joining the fun in the North Stand - N1A, row I, seats 308/309.
Very close to the gentleman that is Hiney, and precisely four rows in front of Diffbrook, who I haven't yet had the pleasure of meeting.
Today's update from the presentation... 13k sold + 1901. West Stand (upper and lower) completely sold out. A few remaining in North Stand (right at the front or right at the back) plus quite a few at the southern end of the East Stand (again right at the front or right at the back).
Smaller parties yes - extreme parties no.
To be elected under AV you need votes from 50% of the electorate. The BNP will never achieve that in any constituency in Britain.
Under the current system, you just need the most in the first round.
For example - as happened in several council...
But can't you listen to all the candidates before election day? The campaign goes on for bloody weeks (if not months), so listen in advance, ask yourself which you'd vote for if your first choice were knocked out, and then mark a "2" next to whoever you want. If you decide you can't vote for any...
Party leaders in favour of AV:

Caroline Lucas (Green)
Alex Salmond (SNP)
Ieuan Wyn Jones (Plaid)
Margaret Ritchie (SDLP)
Nigel Farage (UKIP)
Robin Tilbrook (English Democrats)
Alan Craig (Christian People's Alliance)

Forgive me for sounding stupid, but it is a Friday lunchtime and it's been a long week... I can't work out if you're saying it's fine if it's a few weeks later (but not AV), or whether you're saying you can see it as a point in favour of AV.
It is exactly the same as AV except that AV happens...
In Australia, where single constituencies cover areas FAR larger than here, the result of an AV election is known within 24 hours. Where are you getting this statement from?
Anyone claiming that some people get more than one vote is missing the point. EVERYONE gets the same number of votes. Each round (after someone is knocked out), the voting in effect starts again. Then:
a) If your first choice candidate is still in, you vote again and it still counts for that...
Hi all,
Just wondering where everybody is planning on having a pre-match beverage or two tomorrow? In general terms, are the Albion-supporting masses likely to be in the town centre or near the ground?
Thanks all
Yes, it is an "additional" bank holiday, but it's still a bank holiday - all depends on the wording of your contract. If it says your holiday allowance is "X days plus bank holidays" then I reckon you've got a case for saying they have to pay you. If not then... well, you probably don't.
My plans currently involve meeting a Manchester-based mate up there after having a nice little nap on that very train. I hope you're all the quiet type
They may well be paying out on it - but they're also still taking bets on it too (albeit at only 1/33). Lump all your winnings back on, and make even more ;-)
