Royal wedding b/h - does your company need to pay you

I just recevied my pay cheque and in it was memo from work saying that as the royal wedding was an addtional bank holiday, over and above the normal quota, they did not have to pay us and as the business was shutting for the day, we either had to take it as unpaid or as holiday? Is this correct? any advice from some in the no?

Down to your contract. 28 days paid holiday a year is the law. Public/Bank Holidays are usually sorted firm by firm. Probably within their rights.

Sorry Chucky but we had the same unpaid or holiday ultimatum back in January, we leaked the memo to local radio and my firm received a little adverse publicity! You are stuck with it I am afraid

Not sure about the enforced shutdown without provision. My lot are just open as normal.

I suspect we may be the one of the few companies in Burgess Hill open that day.

As others have said, it's a minimum of 28 days holiday INCLUDING bank holidays. Probably worth naming and shaming your company name on here ( in fact, I'll start a new thread on it ! ).

The whole thing is shit really, the goverment "big anouncement" going to make the Royal Wedding a Bank Holiday so that we can all watch it (not that I would!) and blow me down, the employee gets f***ed by it, lose a days hooliday or a days money, thanks f***ing very much. They dont add that part into the "big anouncement"

In my opinion, better to treat it like any other day where someone I don't know gets married and carry on as normal. Why the hell do I want a holiday for a stranger's wedding? Good luck o them, but I can't care about someone I don't know getting hitched and I certainly wouldn't want to lose a days pay OR a job over it.

IMOP better loose a day pay then a job

IMHO better that the option to work is there if the employer won't pay rather than force workers to lose pay. The employer gets it both ways if they won't pay for the day but also won't let people work it.

Yes, it is an "additional" bank holiday, but it's still a bank holiday - all depends on the wording of your contract. If it says your holiday allowance is "X days plus bank holidays" then I reckon you've got a case for saying they have to pay you. If not then... well, you probably don't.

Like my sons company can his employers say that everybody must work. The reason they have given is that the following Monday is May Day and they say they cant have everybody off for 2 days, as the deliveries would build up If it is decreed a 'bank holiday' surely they cant make people work.

No law to say that they have to pay you. My firm sent us all home last year because none of the systems were working - we either had to take holiday or make the time up.
