Thing is, there's a slight difference between a clever play on words and just being obtuse. I don't feel in a position to judge this particular example but I'm sure others will!
It was a sly move from Guiseley but there's nothing to stop that happening in the game, no rule exists to say that you should give the ball back, nor should it.

I've read the article and I still don't really get it.

Yeah I was thinking similar, came across as fairly knowledgeable without being either preachy or making it about himself, which is better than most manage!

It usually looks like the ball could be caught but sheer desparation seems to kick in instead.
I don't really know a great deal of the ins and outs of train related politics but the gentleman quoted seems to be a bit of a pillock, surely blaming drivers for the vast myriad of issues is like blaming a striker for the defence smashing in a few own goals?
