Agreed, if a company can make it cheaper elsewhere they will go elsewhere, but when will this stop?

Or how about a properly managed car making industry that is competitive? We can make cars in this country competitively, you only have to look at Honda, Nissan and Toyota for the evidence. All built by British workers.

It is funny how as you say when you talk to people of different political viewpoints, their aspirations are very similar.

So much for George Osborne being a lightweight...

No I don't think the public sector did generate 9% of our GDP, but most public sector jobs are related to public services, whose main aim is to provide for the general public and not make profits. I have never said the entire private sector caused this, in fact in one of my posts I have pointed...

I agree with you about the lack of government control on the banking industry and would like to add that I do not blame the vast majority of private sector workers, only the few who carried out the reckless lending in banking. They do have some part to blame however lax the controls were.

There are people who have the life of riley and get paid 30k per year in both public and private sectors, surely you can't believe that this is solely the realm of the public sector? I would also say there are some fairly unproductive people in the private sector who get paid far too much money.

I understand where you are coming from but it is just a tad unfair that the public sector workers did not cause this problem yet they are now going to have to suffer, I suppose that is the way of the world and as in most things in life fairness doesn't come into it. I would also like to add...

Exactly. To quote Bill Hayes at this year's CWU Conference in Bournemouth: " The kids on "sure start" - nurses and teachers - I cannot remember them - in the casino economy. Yet the self same people now watch the computer screen and treat Greece, Spain and Portugal like a gang of punters - at...

So much for George Osborne being a lightweight...

Of course I do! I was trying to point out that the solid foundations that the poster believes our economy should be built on via the private sector can be very very unsteady, as proved recently by the banking crisis. I believe that unless well managed, both the public and private sectors will...

    8 car trains for Falmer?

Thank you BB and Ernest. Although there seems to be a slight oddity to what you are both saying. Ernest is saying the work to introduce a new signal between Falmer and Brighton would cost millions, and BB is saying that once the few months of preperation and planning work that is required to...

    8 car trains for Falmer?

I know you work on the railways, but I don't know what your actual job is so you may not be able to answer this questions! How much it cost for the work you described to be carried out? How long would it take to carry out the work?
