Superb passer of the ball, comfortable in possession, perfect tackler of the ball, great engine and looks like he can have a dig now and again. Pele he is not, however he is the most complete central midfielder we have had for a while.

Yes, that is the only position I can think of that suits him. Because it doesn't require any real skill in terms of passing a football. Going backwards and sidewards is the speciality of most holding midfielders - so it would be a match made in heaven!

Can't remember that far back! All I know was that El-Abd had options in front of him, and plenty of them but copped out of it.

But it was not an instance for going backwards! I'm all for retaining possession, believe me. But if El-Abd has the ball in THEIR half, has most of our team in FRONT of him, has them making runs for him and has TIME, then taking the easy option by passing backwards is NOT the correct option...

Yes, Elphick gave the ball away. But he should never have been put in that position by El-Abd who went backwards when we have a box full of players at the other end. Call it lack of ambition, lack of quality whatever! But it was El-Abd who initially should have gone forward with the ball.

No, I thought by and large Tunnicliffe was worth a 6, if only for his positivity in defending. It's been a long time since I have seen an Albion CB go on a surging run out of defence and into attack. He looks like a defender who can actually PLAY football, as in play the ball to feet, or carry...

No, that was El-Abd. When we had lots of men in the box and plenty of time to pick out a pass he decided to pass it backwards.

You are correct, he should have been subbed at half time, it was the right thing to do. I don't see the logic behind Slade subbing him 15 mins into the second half when we could have sorted that problem from the very start of the last 45 mins. However the point I'm trying to make is that...

Neither did Virgo's if I remember rightly. Virgo was supposed to be playing at right back in that game, Elphick was left to deal with him down the right, all on his own.
