You could add the balance of the developments as well ..just 1/2 bed flats as far as I am aware
That's a nationwide issue . . . 1920's until 60's we built houses with gardens . . . .big and small . . . . . Thats what everyone needs . . . Even victorian terraces and workers 2 up 2 downs had an outside space.

The houses knocked down in the early 80's ( Halfords, B&Q etc) were better than anything built since. IMHO.

I agree, during the mid 50s my Paper Round included many of those houses including the council houses at the eastern end just before the hump back bridge under which the railway accessed the Quay.
Travelling that route now is beginning to seem like going through a canyon.

The new flats might be ‘low-rise’ by Brighton standards, but they’re still big enough to obliterate our view of the Downs from the back of our house. But that’s progress for you 😬 Photo taken 5 mins ago.

My nan and grandad used to live along Harbour Way (a bit further east of your gaff) and then THEY had their view of the Downs obliterated. Funny how these things happen, eh? And yes, it is indeed progress...

I don't think Shoreham is over developed, it's. Being redevloped . . .the problem is the balance of homes to infrastructure.

homes are more compact/smaller, there are more oif them, lots more, and they're being built on what was industrial land .. . . . where the hell does everyone work?

Thsats before you consider schools, doctors, dentists, e decent supermarket in town, roads and a proper cycle path East/west.
At home or in offices – such as those that have sprung up around the place, for example the Focus building, Ropetackle and elsewhere.

In my computer
What worries me in Shoreham is that the planning rules (someone correct me if I'm wrong) seem to allow for 0.86 of a car per apartment in some instances, so not everyone gets a spot. So 120 flats, 240 cars, and only 103 parking spots, so 137 new cars looking for a spot to park.

It goes without saying the dentist issue has been exascerbated, as well as the doctors delay in appointments at Northborne is now 3 weeks...but the cars and the transport just hasn't been clearly thought out.

You won't force people out of their cars, if there is nowhere reliable and cheap to go to...

THat's a very small proportion though. There is little industry, without commuting. Dolphin Rd and the airport basically, pretty much every other business and trade base has gone from the town and been redeveloped into housing, everything off the highSt, both sides of ther riverbank from lighthouse to high street, Ropetackle, nothing on the beach side. Virtually everyone has to commute.

Sure, but you were just asking where everyone worked. And that's where they DO work – partly because, as you point out, shit loads of the industrial stuff has gone from the town

West is BEST
I know quite a few people in Shoreham who deny it’s being overdeveloped.

One in particular got very heightened when I suggested it was headed that way, about 7 or 8 years ago. She lived in a converted cottage just East of the sailing club…..

Suffice it to say she has since moved out.

Shoreham remains a nice town once you’re through the canyon of new builds. My friends still live there and I do most of my socialising there. It’s nice to visit but fast becoming an infrastructural headache for residents.

It’s a commuter town now with new residents working elsewhere and pottering around the farmers market and cafes at the weekends.

Having lived in the centre of town for quite a long time, most of my life in fact, we're quite shielded from the canarywharfification of the quayside. You just notice the mostrosities in the near distance when crossing the footbridge.

I lived in 3 different houses and over 12 years between 1982 and 1999 in New Road. It has taken a real hit. Some lovely houses devalued by modern locational changes. my childhood home is called river view . . . . Had a Garden that went to the river when built . . . . My old flat on the south side had a balcony with a view . . . .until a few years ago.

I was having a beer back in 87 at the pub on the Beach, Spanish Lady? Anyway it was soon after Chay Blythe had been down and endorsed the opening of Emerald Quay, this old boy sat near me and said “You mark my word boy, that new development won’t be the last, they won’t stop till they’ve covered these wharf’s with flats for the yuppies”

It was built with YTS labour from cardboard and crumbs . . . . A friend lived in a house there briefly, you could hear everything and anything through the walls. It's amazing they're still up.

the old boy was spot on.
